Bayern Munich claimed a thrilling win against Freiburg on Sunday evening, enduring a late scare before Michael Olise clinched all three points with a 95th-minute goal. Following unsuccessful European outings for both clubs during the week, the teams faced off at the Europa-Park Stadion, eager to get back to winning form.
Pyrotechnic smoke from the stands caused a brief halt to proceedings within the first minute, but Freiburg regrouped quickly and displayed no intimidation against the defending Bundesliga titleholders. Despite their promising opening, Julian Schuster’s men ultimately fell two goals behind before launching a late resurgence.
Bayern Munich asserts dominance against Freiburg
Freiburg went toe-to-toe with Bayern in the early stages, with Patrick Osterhage shooting wide from range as the home side attempted to make the most of their initial momentum. Nevertheless, Bayern broke the deadlock in the 16th minute courtesy of a stunning counterattack spearheaded by Dayot Upamecano.
Having blocked Niklas Beste’s attempt near the Bayern box, the French centre-back charged forward and traversed nearly the full length of the field. Michael Olise subsequently supplied a superb through ball, enabling Upamecano to slot calmly beyond Mio Backhaus and put the away side ahead.
Freiburg kept hunting for an equaliser, but Lucas Höler’s attempt inside the area was thwarted by Upamecano. Bayern’s offensive prowess proved telling once more just before the interval, as Nathaniel Brown threaded Serge Gnabry through on the left flank of the box. The Germany international converted from a narrow angle in the 43rd minute to double the lead.
Freiburg responds as Bayern endures late pressure
Freiburg started the second period brightly, with Derry Scherhant forcing Jonas Urbig into action from a free kick two minutes after the break. Nevertheless, the hosts found it difficult to penetrate Bayern’s backline, while substitute Ismael Saibari created multiple chances as the visitors pursued a third goal.
On 80 minutes, Saibari and Harry Kane compelled Backhaus into an outstanding double stop. Freiburg then at last broke through at the opposite end, as substitute Vincenzo Grifo sent Jordy Makengo racing down the left side of the area. Makengo slipped the ball between Sacha Boey‘s legs before his low delivery deflected into the net off Bayern midfielder Tom Bischof, pulling the home side back into the match.
As time wound down, Freiburg ramped up the pressure. Yuito Suzuki, Igor Matanovic, and Cyriaque Irie were caught up in a goalmouth scramble, but Bayern’s rearguard eventually cleared the threat. In the 91st minute, Urbig made a vital stop to keep out Matthias Ginter, whose header appeared destined for the top-left corner.
Michael Olise clinches Bayern Munich’s triumph in added time
Bayern still had five minutes of stoppage time to see out, and Freiburg kept pressing for a dramatic leveller. Their ambitions were ultimately dashed in the 95th minute when Olise robbed Backhaus well outside his penalty area.
With the goal left vacant, the Bayern forward composedly rolled the ball into the unguarded net from distance to wrap up all three points in remarkable circumstances.
After a challenging week, Bayern concluded with a win and can now focus on next weekend’s encounter with Borussia Dortmund.
