Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 win against Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday evening, putting an end to the defending champions’ flawless beginning to the La Liga campaign. Kylian Mbappe netted his 100th goal for Madrid to clinch the victory and leave his side three points adrift of Barcelona at the summit of the standings.
Real Madrid takes the lead against Barcelona
Anthony Gordon tested Andriy Lunin with a low effort in the seventh minute before forcing the Real Madrid goalkeeper into another stop seven minutes later. At the opposite end, Joan Garcia kept out Arda Guler’s powerful attempt towards the bottom corner.
Raphinha came close to putting Barcelona ahead after linking up with Gordon, but his strike narrowly went wide of the target. The hosts were then compelled to make an early substitution around the half-hour mark, with Alejandro Balde coming on for Xavi Espart.
Madrid found the breakthrough in the 41st minute when Yan Diomande whipped a low cross into the penalty area. Gerard Martin tried to clear the ball, but it deflected off Mbappe and ended up in the back of the net.
Barcelona had chances to reply before the break. Lamine Yamal sent a promising effort wide, while Diomande hit the side netting from a decent position shortly before the interval.
Raphinha equalises before Mbappe scores his 100th goal
Madrid threatened once more soon after the restart when Jude Bellingham charged forward on a counter-attack but could not locate Mbappe with his pass. Barcelona then levelled through Raphinha, who found the far corner after collecting an excellent ball from Pedri.
The hosts nearly went in front when Gerard Martin connected with a header from six yards, but Lunin produced a superb save to keep Madrid in the game.
With two minutes left, Mbappe provided the decisive moment, bagging his 100th goal for Real Madrid. Bellingham showed impressive footwork before linking with Eduardo Camavinga, who got past Martin and set up the French forward for a simple finish.
Mbappe’s late strike earned all three points for Madrid, bringing Barcelona’s unbeaten start to the league season to an end and moving Los Blancos to within three points of their rivals.
