Brady Tkachuk heads to Florida in major trade to reunite with brother Matthew

Brady Tkachuk has been dealt to the Florida Panthers from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for significant draft capital.

The return package includes the No. 9 and No. 25 selections in the 2026 NHL Draft, a conditional first-round pick in the 2029 Draft, and a second-round pick in the 2027 Draft. The No. 25 selection was originally obtained by Florida earlier the same day in a separate move involving the Seattle Kraken and forward Mackie Samoskevich.

Brady Tkachuk produced 59 points in 60 regular-season games this year, scoring 22 goals and adding 37 assists, but went scoreless in a four-game playoff exit against the eventual champions, the Carolina Hurricanes.

Leadership role and career record

Florida general manager Bill Zito described the forward as an intense, high-impact competitor and a strong locker-room presence, emphasizing his leadership traits and ability to elevate teammates.

The 26-year-old previously captained the Ottawa Senators for five seasons and still has two years remaining on a contract signed in October 2021 worth $57.5 million over seven years.

Since being selected fourth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, he has accumulated 463 points across 572 regular-season appearances, along with seven points in 10 playoff games.

Trade request and front office reasoning

Although public comments earlier in the year suggested full commitment to Ottawa, team management later confirmed that a trade request ultimately changed the direction of negotiations.

General manager Steve Staios explained that while the organization initially expected to continue with their captain long-term, it became apparent during the season that circumstances had shifted. He added that clarity around the player’s intentions led to the decision to move him.

Staios also noted that discussions about future contract intentions would be better directed to the player himself, while confirming that the club prioritized long-term flexibility and future assets in return.

Brotherly reunion in South Florida

The move brings Brady Tkachuk together with his brother Matthew Tkachuk for the first time in NHL competition, as the latter has been a key figure for the Florida Panthers since arriving in a major trade in 2022.

That earlier deal brought Matthew from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt, and a conditional first-round pick. He also signed an eight-year extension running through the 2029–30 season.

Since joining Florida, Matthew has helped the club reach three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals and secure back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025, although the team missed the playoffs this season after finishing seventh in their division.

International success before NHL pairing

Before becoming teammates at club level, the Tkachuk brothers have already shared the ice internationally with Team USA at major tournaments.

They competed together at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February 2025 and later at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where they contributed to a historic gold medal victory for the United States. Brady registered five points in six games during the Olympic tournament, while Matthew contributed six assists.
