Real Madrid defeat RB Leipzig 4-1 to keep perfect record

Real Madrid continued their flawless Champions League league phase campaign with a dominant 4-1 win against RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu. Goals from Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé, and Yan Diomande sealed the victory for the home side, even though Leipzig scored late.

Following a first half that saw opportunities for both teams, Real Madrid broke the deadlock just before the break. Güler increased the lead early in the second half, and Mbappé added a third with an excellent curling strike. Leipzig briefly threatened to respond through Tidiam Gomis, but Diomande’s powerful volley guaranteed the hosts ended the match with a comfortable advantage.

The outcome boosted Real Madrid’s momentum before Sunday’s important El Clasico against Barcelona.

RB Leipzig threaten before Real Madrid seize control

Leipzig began brightly, with Rômulo Cardoso penetrating the Real Madrid defense after a pass played behind the back line. Dean Huijsen reacted swiftly to intervene before the Brazilian could shoot. Antonio Nusa also created problems on the left wing as the visitors aimed to exploit gaps in the home defense.

Real Madrid gradually generated chances of their own. Güler found Bernardo Silva inside the six-yard box, but the Portuguese midfielder couldn’t make clean contact. The Turkish playmaker then escaped his marker on the right and sent a dangerous ball across the goalmouth, but his teammates missed the opportunity to convert.

Mbappé also found himself in a promising position inside the penalty area, though his attempt didn’t trouble Maarten Vandevoordt. At the other end, Rômulo forced Thibaut Courtois into a low save with a shot aimed towards the bottom corner, while Vinícius Jr tested the Leipzig goalkeeper after driving forward from the left.

Nusa continued to pose a threat, but Antonio Rüdiger blocked his effort after the winger worked his way past several challenges. Leipzig then missed their clearest opportunity of the half when Rômulo was sent through on goal again, but Courtois won the one-on-one duel.

Bernardo Silva and Arda Güler put Real Madrid ahead

Real Madrid finally broke the deadlock two minutes before half-time. Mbappé, Federico Valverde, and Güler combined in the build-up, with the latter forcing Vandevoordt to spill his shot. Silva reacted quickest to the rebound, tapping the ball into the net from close range to score his first goal for the club.

The hosts carried their advantage into the second half and immediately looked to extend it. Güler drove forward before releasing Valverde with a perfectly timed pass into space on the overlap, but the Uruguayan’s effort was kept out by the Leipzig goalkeeper.

Real Madrid’s second goal arrived in the 52nd minute. Jude Bellingham delivered a clipped cross towards the back post, where Mbappé rose highest to direct the ball down into Güler’s path. The Turkish midfielder was left with a simple finish from barely a yard out, giving the hosts a two-goal cushion.

Kylian Mbappé seals Champions League victory

Leipzig continued to search for a way back into the match, while Real Madrid remained dangerous going forward. Mbappé came close to adding another goal, and Valverde produced an important defensive intervention to prevent the visitors from creating a clear-cut scoring opportunity.

The French forward eventually got his name on the scoresheet in the closing stages. Picking up the ball on the edge of the penalty area, Mbappé curled a superb effort into the top-right corner to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond Leipzig’s reach.

Gomis pulled one back for the German side after a fast break, offering a brief response to Real Madrid’s dominance. However, Diomande restored the three-goal margin with a ferocious volley into the top corner, completing the 4-1 victory for the hosts.

Real Madrid’s latest win extended their perfect start to the Champions League league phase. With Barcelona next on the schedule, the result also provided a timely boost ahead of Sunday’s El Clasico.
