Nottingham Forest has finalized a deal with Chelsea for the acquisition of striker Liam Delap, a move valued at approximately £50m and marking a new club benchmark.
The 23-year-old forward is slated to undergo his medical examination and sign a multi-year contract at the City Ground within the coming days.
Delap’s arrival at Chelsea came just last summer from Ipswich Town for £30m, with Manchester United and Everton also vying for his services at that point. However, following a season where he registered a solitary Premier League goal and contended with shoulder and hamstring issues, the London club opted to make him available in the market.
Delap poised to join Forest’s attacking ranks
Forest’s pursuit of Delap signals their intent to bolster their offensive options as they aim to enhance their attacking depth.
The striker is expected to vie for starting minutes alongside Chris Wood and Igor Jesus. Neither of those forwards found the back of the net as Forest kicked off their Premier League season with a 1-0 loss to Leeds on Saturday.
This proposed transfer would represent another significant acquisition for Forest during this window. The club has already secured Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande for £34m, while Austrian midfielder Xaver Schlager and goalkeeper Steve Benda joined on free transfers.
Additionally, the club has generated substantial revenue through departures. England midfielder Elliot Anderson was sold to Manchester City for a club-record £116m, while striker Taiwo Awoniyi moved to Coventry City for £9m.
Chelsea clears space for new forwards
Delap’s exit follows Chelsea’s addition of two strikers to their roster over the summer period.
The west London outfit brought in Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and also secured Danny Welbeck from Brighton, which intensified the competition for places that Delap faced.
His tenure at Chelsea spanned just one season after his £30m transfer from Ipswich. His lone Premier League goal in that period came during a campaign hampered by shoulder and hamstring injuries.
For Forest, this move would inject further competition into their attacking unit as they seek to bounce back from their opening-day setback.
Delap’s path from Derby to Ipswich
Delap honed his skills in Derby County’s youth system before making the switch to Manchester City in 2019.
He contributed to City’s FA Youth Cup triumph in the 2019-20 season and followed that with a stellar showing in Premier League 2 the next year. The forward netted 24 goals in 20 appearances as City’s youth squad claimed the title.
Delap made his senior City debut in September 2020, finding the net in a 2-1 League Cup win over Bournemouth. Three days later, he made his Premier League debut in a 5-2 defeat to Leicester.
Injuries limited his chances with City’s first team, leading to loan spells in the Championship with Stoke, Preston North End, and Hull City from 2022 to 2024.
From Manchester City to Chelsea and beyond
City offloaded Delap to Ipswich for £20m in the summer of 2024, where he quickly became a key figure in their attack.
He tallied 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for the newly promoted side, which earned him a transfer to Chelsea after just one season.
Now, merely a year after arriving at Stamford Bridge, Delap is on the verge of yet another move, with Nottingham Forest agreeing to terms that could see him become their most expensive signing ever.
