Newcastle United has secured a deal with Manchester City for Nico Gonzalez, with the transfer potentially reaching £52m.
The 24-year-old midfielder is expected to join St. James’ Park after Newcastle recognized the urgency to add seasoned Premier League players following several notable exits.
Gonzalez has been in English football for just over a year since his move from Porto, but his youth and skill set align with the recruitment strategy led by head coach Matthias Jaissle.
Newcastle prioritizes league-ready talent
Earlier in the transfer window, the club focused solely on overseas prospects, but the exits of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Kieran Trippier have shifted priorities toward players who know the demands of the Premier League.
Gonzalez had earlier stated he “did not want to leave” the Etihad, but the situation at Manchester City has evolved. The club has agreed an £85.6m fee for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and already brought in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m.
Gonzalez remained on the bench during City’s 2-1 comeback win over Bournemouth at the weekend, a match that marked Enzo Maresca’s debut as Premier League manager.
His departure would make him the fourth senior midfielder to exit City this summer, following Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Tijjani Reijnders.
Gonzalez matches Jaissle’s vision
Newcastle has already completed six signings this summer, including goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen, defender Amar Dedic, midfielders Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur, and forward Bazoumana Toure.
Still, Jaissle admitted last week that more work was needed, telling BBC Sport that “adjustments need to be done and will be.”

He also ranked among the Premier League’s top five midfielders for line-breaking passes, delivering 12 per match.
