Leeds United continued their unbeaten beginning to the new Premier League season with a convincing 4-1 triumph over Newcastle United at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke’s team delivered a ruthless first-half performance, building a 3-0 advantage by the break before Noah Okafor struck a stunning fourth soon after the interval. Newcastle grabbed a late consolation, but Leeds stayed in complete command.
Leeds overpower Newcastle in thrilling first half
Leeds began with purpose and demanded a penalty when the ball hit Matias Fernandez-Pardo’s hand inside the box, but neither Michael Salisbury nor VAR granted a spot kick. Ethan Ampadu then watched a powerful long-range strike deflect away off Dominic Calvert-Lewin before it could test Lukás Hornícek.
The Newcastle goalkeeper was quickly busy again, diving low to his right to deny Jayden Bogle’s clever flick after James Justin had kept a deep cross alive. Bogle threatened once more with a fierce half volley from a partially cleared corner, with Hornícek managing to push the effort away.
The deadlock was finally broken after Okafor led a swift break down the left and picked out Ao Tanaka. The Japanese midfielder shot towards goal, with the ball deflecting off Lewis Miley and wrong-footing Hornícek before nestling in the far corner.
Leeds quickly doubled their lead. Justin delivered into the box, and Calvert-Lewin rose highest to head towards the corner, although the ball seemed to graze Bogle before finding the net.
Leeds seal 4-1 win before half-time
Newcastle nearly got back into the match when Calvert-Lewin saw a close-range effort kept out by a superb reaction save from Hornícek. Harvey Barnes then threatened at the other end, but Tarik Muharemović got across to block his attempt.
Leeds eventually added a third just before the break. Bogle’s cross-field pass was flicked on by Anton Stach, sending Calvert-Lewin through. The forward turned past his marker and showed composure to bundle the ball home.
The hosts resumed with the same intensity and immediately pushed for another goal. Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cross from the left nearly caught out Hornícek at the far post, while Stach later stole possession inside the Newcastle box and chipped the advancing goalkeeper, only for the ball to roll narrowly wide.
Newcastle struggle as Leeds add a fourth
The fourth goal came on the hour mark and was once again spectacular. A set-piece was headed towards the edge of the penalty area, where Okafor was waiting. The Swiss forward met it with a thunderous half volley that flew into the corner, sending Elland Road into celebration.
Brenden Aaronson and Harry Wilson were then brought on for Tanaka and Okafor, while Melvin Bard made his Elland Road debut in place of Gudmundsson. Newcastle responded with a spell of possession and came close when Joe Willock sent a looping effort onto the top of the crossbar and over the goal.
Willock also forced an intervention from James Trafford, but Newcastle struggled to turn their possession into sustained pressure. With just over 10 minutes remaining, Calvert-Lewin was replaced by Lukas Nmecha and received a standing ovation from the Leeds supporters.
Newcastle find late consolation after Leeds control
Nmecha almost marked his arrival with a goal when he stretched to meet Daniel James’ lifted cross in front of the goal but could not make contact. Newcastle eventually pulled one back through Bazoumana Touré.
The visitors then had another opportunity after Wilson delivered a deep free kick and Nico Elvedi headed it back across goal. However, nobody was able to finish the move, and Newcastle had to settle for a goal kick.
James later drove towards goal before firing over the bar, bringing the action to an end shortly afterwards as Salisbury blew the final whistle.
