Manchester United still without a win as Mbéumo scores

Bryan Mbeumo offered a uncommon positive moment for Manchester United by scoring again in their 1-1 tie with Leeds United at Elland Road, yet Michael Carrick’s team has now gone six straight games without a win. The Cameroon international has netted four times in seven Premier League outings, placing him among the side’s most effective attackers this season.

United displayed determination at Leeds, similar to their effort against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday after conceding early in the match. However, another stalemate brought minimal comfort for a club finding it hard to convert strong showings into victories.

The outcome stretched United’s poorest winless streak since the 2018-19 season, when their form declined after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was made permanent manager. Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher cautioned that treating such results as acceptable could reduce standards at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United turmoil goes on under Michael Carrick

Carrick said afterward that he had largely tuned out external criticism during the week, including the uproar over Lisandro Martinez’s remarks about the club’s leadership. Still, he knows United need to begin winning games to climb the table.

The lead-up to the Leeds match was dominated by Martinez’s critique of sporting director Jason Wilcox and the club’s hierarchy regarding their summer transfers. Martinez later apologized for the timing and context of his comments, though he maintained the essence of his critique. Wilcox observed from the stands at Elland Road, while the defender began the game and was replaced at halftime due to a thigh injury.

United’s left-back troubles have also compelled Carrick to make frequent changes, with Diogo Dalot becoming the fifth different player to start there this season. Luke Shaw’s status for Wednesday’s Champions League match at Como was still unclear, adding to the manager’s selection worries.

Defensive fitness problems made things more difficult. With Matthijs de Ligt still being handled cautiously after nearly 11 months out with a back issue, Carrick chose to bring on full-back Noussair Mazraoui instead of the Netherlands international after Martinez was withdrawn. United ended the match in 13th place, with the chance of dropping lower as the round progressed.

Despite the challenging situation, Carrick called the draw a chance for a new beginning. He admitted the circumstances were not perfect but stressed the team needed to stay steady, keep working properly, and trust they could build a winning streak.

Bryan Mbeumo’s strike gives Manchester United optimism

Mbeumo’s input at Elland Road was significant, even though his display had flaws. He squandered a free header before scoring and could not prevent Dominic Calvert-Lewin from scoring Leeds’ equalizer soon after halftime.

Nevertheless, the forward has grown into a more valuable player in an attack where multiple teammates have been inconsistent. Bruno Fernandes has not replicated the impact he had when setting the Premier League assist record last season, while Benjamin Sesko is still out with a shin injury.

Mbeumo has also shown great adaptability in taking on various attacking roles. He first played on the right while Amad Diallo was injured, then shifted to center-forward after Diallo came back. Against Leeds, he started on the left, with Fernandes moving into a more central position.

Former United striker Dion Dublin noted that players who can fill multiple positions are frequently asked to adjust for the team’s sake. Given the current situation, he feels Mbeumo’s readiness to take on those duties is especially crucial.

Carrick was similarly grateful for the forward’s dedication, commending his eagerness to help in both defense and attack. The manager pointed out Mbeumo’s readiness to give up his favored role for the team’s benefit and appreciated his knack for getting into threatening attacking spots, even as United’s winless stretch persisted.
