Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has firmly stated that Alexis Mac Allister is not for sale, pushing back against persistent rumors linking the midfielder with a move away. The World Cup winner is only halfway through the five-year deal he signed upon joining the club in 2023, yet talks over a new contract have yet to commence.
This delay has sparked speculation that Mac Allister could be on his way out when the summer window opens. Despite this, Iraola made it clear he has no intention of letting one of his most influential players leave.
The Liverpool manager called Mac Allister a cornerstone of the team’s recent success and acknowledged that top-level performers will always attract attention from elsewhere.
He noted that every transfer period brings outside interest, but his focus remains on adding fresh talent to the squad rather than letting key figures depart.
Alisson’s leadership role grows at Liverpool
Iraola also touched on the situation surrounding goalkeeper Alisson, whose current contract runs until next summer and has reportedly caught the eye of Juventus.
Far from viewing the Brazilian as a potential exit, the coach emphasized his immense value as both a player and a leader in the dressing room. Iraola confirmed he is content with the club’s goalkeeping depth heading into the new season.
According to the Liverpool boss, Alisson’s influence has become even more critical as the squad undergoes a transition following the departure of several veteran figures. He expects the shot-stopper to play a key role in integrating new arrivals and mentoring younger teammates.
Iraola also mentioned Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as seasoned professionals whose guidance will be essential during this period of change throughout the upcoming campaign.
Liverpool targeting defensive additions before deadline
While Iraola is committed to holding onto his top talent, he confirmed that Liverpool are actively seeking defensive reinforcements before the window shuts.
The manager revealed that the right-back spot has become a pressing concern after Conor Bradley suffered a knee injury in January and is not expected back for several months.
Iraola stated that Liverpool would have been perfectly comfortable with Bradley in that role had he been fit, as the club views him as the long-term answer at right-back.
But with Bradley still sidelined and the team also lacking depth in central defense, Iraola admitted the squad is currently stretched thin and is working hard to find solutions.
