Jack Campbell has announced his retirement from hockey after an eight-season NHL career. The 34-year-old goaltender confirmed the decision on Sunday, ending a professional playing chapter that included time with four NHL teams and an All-Star appearance.
Campbell last appeared in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers during the 2023-24 season. He recorded a 1-4-0 record, a 4.50 goals-against average, and a .873 save percentage in five games before being placed on waivers on Nov. 7, 2024.
After clearing waivers, Campbell continued the season with Bakersfield in the American Hockey League. He finished with an 18-13-1 record, a 2.63 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage, and three shutouts across 33 games.

Campbell’s decision brings an end to a career that began when he was selected by the Dallas Stars with the No. 11 pick in the 2010 NHL Draft. Over his time in the league, he played for the Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Oilers.
The goaltender explained that leaving hockey was not an easy choice but said the experience gave him more than he expected. He also revealed that he will begin a new chapter as an identity and performance coach.
Campbell entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program on Oct. 4, 2024, before returning to complete his final AHL season. That campaign marked the end of his professional playing career.
Oilers goalie reflects on final NHL chapter
Campbell signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Oilers on July 13, 2022. The final three seasons of that deal were later bought out.
He agreed to a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on July 1, 2024, but did not appear for the NHL team. Instead, he played 14 games for their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.
Looking back on his career, Campbell said he spent years focused on reaching the NHL and was grateful to have achieved that goal. He also spoke about the personal challenges he faced throughout his playing days.
NHL career numbers and playoff record
During his NHL career, Campbell posted a 93-52-18 record in 176 regular-season games, including 164 starts. He finished with a 2.76 goals-against average, a .909 save percentage, and 10 shutouts.
In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Campbell appeared in 18 games, making 14 starts. He recorded a 7-8 record, a 2.28 goals-against average, a .920 save percentage, and two shutouts.
Campbell said that the work that brought him the most fulfillment was no longer only related to stopping pucks but also helping people reach their potential. His next career step will focus on that goal outside of professional hockey.
