Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel will miss significant time after injuring his left ankle during Monday’s matchup against the Texas Rangers. The 24-year-old has been placed on the 10-day injured list, with the club still assessing the full extent of the damage.
Manager Will Venable confirmed that Teel suffered a high ankle sprain, which could sideline him for anywhere from six to twelve weeks. To fill the gap, the team has called up Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte while Teel begins his recovery.
Teel’s latest injury adds to challenging season
The injury occurred in the second inning of Chicago’s 10-3 victory over Texas, when Teel attempted to make a tag at home plate. He couldn’t put weight on his left ankle and needed assistance leaving the field, with Drew Romo stepping in as catcher.
Venable noted that the recovery timeline remains flexible but expressed optimism that Teel’s youth and resilience could speed up his return.
“It’s going to be some time, but I think with a range that big and Kyle being a young, strong man that he can go about his treatment and rehab and hopefully make it as quick as possible,” Venable said.
This setback adds to a tough season for Teel, who has only played 19 games due to previous hamstring and knee issues. He had already spent time on the 60-day injured list earlier this year.
Teel’s performance and trade history
Teel is batting .190 this season with two home runs and 14 RBIs. In his rookie year last season, he posted a .273 average with eight homers and 35 RBIs over 78 games.
Originally selected 14th overall by the Boston Red Sox in the 2023 amateur draft, Teel came to Chicago as part of a December 2024 trade that sent left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet to Boston.
The White Sox received four prospects in that deal, with Teel emerging as one of the organization’s most promising young talents.
Quero steps in as Teel recovers
With Teel unavailable, the White Sox have recalled 22-year-old switch-hitter Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte. Quero made his major league debut last season and appeared in 111 games, hitting .268 with five home runs and 36 RBIs.
This season, Quero has played 55 major league games, batting .187 with two homers. He was optioned back to Triple-A after Teel returned from injury on June 22.
The White Sox will now lean on Quero while Teel focuses on rehabbing his ankle, an injury expected to keep him out for a substantial portion of the season.
