Braden Montgomery was called up from the minors by the Chicago White Sox and made his MLB debut on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves. Early in the game, he recorded his first career hit and RBI with a single in the fourth inning, but the defining moment came much later.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, with two outs and an 0-1 count, Montgomery launched a two-run walk-off home run while the White Sox were trailing 5-4. The blast sealed a 6-5 extra-innings victory for Chicago and immediately turned his debut into a memorable occasion, with his reaction from second base through home plate highlighting the emotion of the moment.
Rare place in MLB history
The walk-off homer in his first major league game placed Montgomery in exclusive company. According to CBS Sports research, he became only the fifth player in the modern era (since 1900) to accomplish the feat.
He joins a short list that includes Billy Parker (1971), Josh Bard (2002), Miguel Cabrera (2003), and Carlos Perez (2015), underscoring how uncommon the achievement is across more than a century of baseball history.
Injuries open door for opportunity
Chicago entered the game dealing with key absences in its lineup. Munetaka Murakami was placed on the injured list due to a hamstring issue, while Colson Montgomery did not play because of back tightness.
Those setbacks came at a time when the club had been leaning on a power-heavy core that included Murakami, Colson Montgomery, and Miguel Vargas. With two of those bats unavailable against the MLB-leading Braves, the White Sox turned to Braden Montgomery, who helped deliver the win in dramatic fashion.
Season turnaround and roster impact
Montgomery’s promotion also tied into a larger roster reshaping that included Chase Meidroth and Kyle Teel as part of the return package in the trade that sent left-hander Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox. The Texas A&M product was selected 12th overall in the 2024 draft and began his pro career as a top-40 prospect in baseball.
Before his call-up, he hit .313/.429/.606 over 27 Double-A games with Birmingham, adding five doubles, three triples, and six home runs. He then posted a .315/.417/.495 line in 29 Triple-A games with Charlotte, along with eight doubles and four home runs.
The White Sox, who set a modern record with 121 losses in 2024 and followed with 102 losses the next season, have taken a major step forward in 2026. With the win, they improved to 35-31, holding the top American League wild-card position while sitting just half a game behind the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central race.
