Francisco Alvarez has been activated by the New York Mets after recovering from a torn meniscus in his right knee suffered on May 12. To make room on the roster, the club sent Hayden Senger back to Triple-A.
The 24-year-old catcher’s return arrives as the Mets attempt to steady their season while remaining in the wild-card mix, with Alvarez rejoining the squad after roughly a month on the injured list.
Offensive production and catching comparison
Before his injury, Alvarez played 37 games and logged 128 plate appearances, producing a .241/.317/.393 slash line with four home runs and an OPS+ of 100, which matches league-average production.
When compared with typical catcher output this season (.226/.299/.373), his numbers sit slightly above standard positional performance. By contrast, Mets catchers other than Alvarez—Hayden Senger and Luis Torrens combined—have produced a .203/.248/.314 line.
Injuries and struggling Mets’ offense
The Mets’ lineup has been heavily affected by absences, including Francisco Lindor (calf strain), Luis Robert Jr. (herniated disc), Jorge Polanco (wrist injury), and Tyrone Taylor (hip flexor issue). These setbacks have contributed to a weakened attack.
As a result, the Mets offense ranks near the bottom of Major League Baseball, sitting 25th in runs scored and 29th in both OPS and on-base percentage.
Standings picture and playoff outlook
New York currently holds a 29–36 record and remains in last place in the National League East, though recent form has improved with a 7–4 run since May 26 after previously being 11 games under .500.
In the National League wild-card race, Arizona and San Diego are tied for the final spot at 34–31, leaving the Mets five games back and behind seven teams overall. Their run differential of -5 suggests performance closer to a .500 level, but they also face the toughest remaining schedule in MLB based on opponents’ winning percentage.
Despite the challenges, FanGraphs estimates their playoff probability at 21.5%, up from 13.6% earlier in the season.
