Zdeno Chara to host emotional final NHL game in Slovakia

Zdeno Chara’s final NHL appearance came on April 29, 2022, when he returned to the New York Islanders, the club where his remarkable career began. Four years into retirement, the former defenseman is preparing for another memorable night on the ice, this time in his hometown of Trencin, Slovakia.

On Aug. 21, Chara will headline Zee’s Final Shift at Pavol Demitra Ice Arena. The event will bring together former teammates, friends, and some of hockey’s biggest names for a farewell celebration, while also raising money to support several schools in Slovakia.

The guest list includes Ray Bourque, Mark Recchi, Jaromir Jagr, David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron, Anze Kopitar, Ziggy Palffy, and Marian Hossa. Jaroslav Halak, Andrej Sekera, Marco Sturm, and Andrew Ference are also expected to take part, either on the ice or behind the bench. Brad Marchand had been scheduled to play but will miss the event after undergoing surgery.

Zdeno Chara returns to Trencin for the final shift

Chara has appeared in alumni and charity games since his NHL career ended, although he admits skating no longer feels as natural as it once did. After stepping away from regular hockey, he has found endurance events such as Ironmans more comfortable than returning to the rink.

Zee’s Final Shift will give Chara an opportunity to share the ice with many people who played an important role during his 24-season Hall of Fame career. He said he is especially grateful to the players traveling during their offseason to be part of the occasion.

Many of those former teammates and friends are people Chara has not seen for years, making the event as much a reunion as a farewell. He also sees it as a chance to thank the fans and people who supported him throughout his career.

The idea for the game was influenced by Marian Hossa, who held his own charity event in Trencin three years ago. Chara attended that game and was impressed by the concept, making it easier for him to accept when the same organizers later approached him.

Chara’s NHL career began with the Islanders

Although Chara started his NHL career with the New York Islanders and spent his first four seasons there, most of his professional career was played in North America. Apart from representing Slovakia internationally, his time in hockey was largely away from his hometown.

He did briefly return to Trencin during the 2001-02 season, playing eight games for HK Dukla Trencin while negotiating his contract with the Ottawa Senators. That remained his only significant spell playing hockey in his native city during his career.

Chara explained that other players from Trencin had more opportunities to say goodbye to local supporters and formally mark their retirements. He never actively sought such an occasion for himself after ending his career but eventually agreed after being persuaded by the event’s organizers.

The upcoming celebration therefore carries a personal meaning beyond the game itself. It will allow Chara to reconnect with the city where he was born and raised and with the people who followed his journey from the beginning.

Zee’s Final Shift brings hockey legends together

The event will feature a matchup between Team Boston and Team Svet, with the latter made up of players from around the world. The gathering will extend beyond the game, with participants set to take part in golf or biking, a barbecue, and other activities in Trencin the following day.

For Chara, returning home means revisiting memories from childhood, including the years he spent growing up, playing hockey, and building friendships. His hometown also carries a long hockey history, adding another layer of significance to the occasion.

The former defenseman now works with the Boston Bruins as a hockey operations advisor and mentor and has returned to the organization since his playing days. Zee’s Final Shift will provide a different kind of connection with the sport and with the people who watched his career unfold.

Most importantly, Chara views the event as an opportunity to share his farewell with the fans in the place where his story began. With so many former teammates and hockey figures making the trip, the night is set to become both a celebration of his career and a thank-you to those who helped make it possible.
