The Anaheim Ducks will pay tribute to Ryan Getzlaf by raising his No. 15 jersey to the rafters on Jan. 30, during a home game against the Nashville Predators. The organization made the announcement on Tuesday, confirming that their longtime captain will become just the fourth player in team history to receive this prestigious honor.
Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli shared the exciting news with Getzlaf in a personal video posted across social media channels. Henry Samueli spoke about the center’s remarkable journey with the franchise, emphasizing his record-breaking achievements, his leadership on and off the ice, and his deep commitment to community initiatives as key factors in the decision.
Getzlaf’s legacy celebrated by Anaheim
Getzlaf dedicated his entire 17-year NHL career to Anaheim, ultimately stepping away from the game following the 2021-22 season. He served as team captain for 12 of those years and concluded his tenure holding franchise records for games played, total points, and assists.
Now 41 years old, Getzlaf suited up for 1,157 regular-season contests with the Ducks, amassing 1,019 points and 737 assists. He stands second in team history for power-play points with 341, ranks third in game-winning goals with 57, and sits fourth in goals scored with 282.
His contributions were equally significant during the playoffs. Getzlaf leads Anaheim in postseason appearances with 125 games played, while also holding the franchise marks for playoff goals, assists, and points with 37, 83, and 120, respectively.
In his response, Getzlaf expressed gratitude to the Samueli family and the entire Ducks organization for this recognition. He also took time to acknowledge the teammates, coaches, and behind-the-scenes staff who played a role in shaping his successful career.
Ducks add Getzlaf to elite company
With this honor, Getzlaf joins an exclusive group that includes Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya, and Scott Niedermayer. The numbers 8, 9, and 27 belonging to those legends already hang proudly above the ice at Honda Center, and now No. 15 will be added to that distinguished collection.
The Samuelis described Getzlaf as a transformative figure whose impact on the Ducks will resonate for years to come. They praised his leadership qualities, his championship pedigree, and his unwavering dedication to the Southern California community, noting that he deserves a permanent place among the franchise’s most iconic figures.
Originally selected 10th overall by Anaheim in the 2003 NHL Draft, Getzlaf enjoyed a decorated career that included All-Star Game appearances in 2008, 2009, and 2015. He was also voted to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 2014.
That particular season proved to be one of his finest, as he tallied 87 points through 31 goals and 56 assists. His outstanding play earned him runner-up status in Hart Trophy voting, finishing behind only Sidney Crosby.
Getzlaf’s championship journey with Anaheim
The pinnacle of Getzlaf’s time with the Ducks came in 2007, when he played an integral role in securing the franchise’s first Stanley Cup. To commemorate this achievement, the organization will celebrate the 20th anniversary of that title run during a Jan. 28 matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, just days before Getzlaf’s jersey retirement ceremony.
His excellence extended well beyond the NHL, as he represented Canada with distinction on numerous international stages. Getzlaf captured gold at the 2003 Under-18 World Championship and the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championship, before adding World Cup of Hockey gold in 2016 and Olympic triumphs in 2010 and 2014.
These accomplishments place Getzlaf among just three players in hockey history to have won both the Stanley Cup and five separate international gold medals.
No. 15 retirement caps storied NHL career
Since hanging up his skates, Getzlaf has remained active in the hockey world. He joined Hockey Canada’s management team for the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025, the 2025 IIHF World Championship, and the upcoming 2026 Olympics.
Additionally, he has worked with the NHL Department of Player Safety since 2024. Now, the retirement of his No. 15 jersey adds yet another milestone to a career characterized by endurance, strong leadership, team accomplishments, and international success.
