Nikita Kucherov explains trade request from Tampa Bay Lightning

Nikita Kucherov has explained the reasons behind informing the Tampa Bay Lightning that he would not be putting pen to paper on a fresh deal and officially asking to be moved, stressing that his choice is not motivated by financial factors.

The 33-year-old forward cited insufficient communication and respect from the organisation, stating that he had only held talks with general manager Julien BriseBois on two occasions during the preceding four months. Kucherov further indicated that the club had made it evident he was at liberty to depart once his contract runs out.

In spite of the ambiguity regarding his future, the Russian forward stays dedicated to assisting Tampa Bay in securing victories while he remains a member of the roster.

Nikita Kucherov reveals reasons behind trade request

“It was never about the money for me,” Kucherov stated on Monday. “It was more about poor communication and respect. Over the last four months, we only have had two conversations, and (general manager Julien BriseBois) in the end made it clear that I’m free to walk on July 1.”

Kucherov is currently in the last year of an eight-year, $76 million contract that he signed on July 10, 2018. The agreement carries an average annual value of $9.5 million, and the forward has been able to negotiate a new deal since July 1. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the present season.

The Lightning’s stance has been notably different from that of the player. BriseBois released a statement on Friday affirming that the organisation has no plans to part ways with its star forward.

“Tampa Bay unequivocally has no intention of trading Nikita,” the general manager said in the statement.

Kucherov’s legacy and achievements with Tampa Bay

Chosen by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft as the 58th overall selection, Kucherov has cemented his status as one of the most accomplished players in the franchise’s history.

He has lifted the Stanley Cup on two occasions, in 2020 and 2021, along with two Hart Trophies as the NHL’s most valuable player in 2019 and 2026. The forward has also secured the Art Ross Trophy three times, ending as the league’s top scorer in 2019, 2024, and 2025.

Kucherov reached another notable milestone on October 24, becoming Tampa Bay’s all-time leading scorer. An assist during a 5-4 overtime loss to the Utah Mammoth moved him ahead of Steven Stamkos, who had previously held the record with 1,137 points.

His Lightning career now totals 1,142 points, made up of 405 goals and 737 assists across 892 games. He has maintained an impressive scoring pace this season, registering 18 points from four goals and 14 assists in 13 appearances.

Kucherov speaks about teammates and Tampa Bay’s future

Despite his wish to depart, Kucherov made it evident that his bond with the organisation stays strong. When asked what Tampa Bay meant to him, he described the club as everything, emphasising the people he had encountered, the championships he had secured, and the life his family had established there.

“Everything. I got drafted here, played for … This is my 14th year. (I won) a couple of championships, and I’ve met a lot of great people. Everything. My kids grow up here. I’m forever grateful for this organization,” he said.

The forward also confirmed that his teammates had learned about his trade request directly from him, rather than discovering it through other means.

“They heard it from me first,” Kucherov explained. “Those guys are my family, and this will never change.”

He nonetheless maintained that his immediate priorities remain unchanged, despite the ambiguity surrounding his future.

“For now, I’m part of this team, and I will do anything I can to help my teammates win,” he added.

When questioned about whether he could picture a scenario in which he stayed with the Lightning, Kucherov started to reply but left his response incomplete: “I make my request, and yeah …”

Lightning teammates react to Kucherov’s situation

Brandon Hagel also commented on the matter, indicating that contract talks and personal choices should not divert the team from its performances on the ice.

The forward recognised that circumstances involving contracts can grow complicated and do not necessarily relate to the relationship between a player and his club.

“The focus is playing, and that’s his focus as well, and that other stuff will take care of itself,” Hagel said.

He additionally backed Kucherov’s dedication to his teammates, underlining that the Russian had not ceased giving his all for the team despite requesting a move.

“He didn’t quit on us. He doesn’t give up on us. It’s just the reality of hockey and the reality of those types of situations, and that will get dealt with,” Hagel added.

The Lightning, who occupy the Eastern Conference’s first wild-card position with an 8-3-2 record, are set to host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. Kucherov remains available to assist the team as the situation regarding his long-term future continues to evolve.
