West Ham United have set a new EFL transfer benchmark by securing Belgium midfielder Arne Engels from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in a deal worth £22m.
The 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, with the Hammers confirming the fee represents a record for a second-tier English club. This eclipses the £17.5m Ipswich Town invested twelve months ago for Norway forward Sindre Walle Egeli.
West Ham suffered relegation in May and now prepare for their first Championship season since 2012, opening with an away fixture at Burnley on Sunday. Engels will miss that clash, but his first appearance is slated for the London Stadium on Saturday, 22 August, when Charlton Athletic visit.
Record-breaking move brings Engels to East London
Engels joins West Ham having featured 100 times for Celtic, netting 17 goals and registering 22 assists during his stint. He collected back-to-back Scottish top-flight titles after arriving from Augsburg in August 2024.
On the international stage, the midfielder has earned four caps for Belgium. His professional journey started at Club Brugge, followed by a spell at Augsburg before his move to Glasgow.
Engels becomes West Ham’s fourth acquisition of the summer window. The club have also secured Venezuelan midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, and Israeli winger Manor Solomon.
Hammers look to Engels for promotion push
West Ham’s head of player recruitment, Nils Koppen, revealed the club had tracked Engels extensively and viewed him as a priority signing.
Koppen praised the midfielder’s blend of youth, proven track record, and standout displays for Celtic, calling him a valuable fit for the squad. He also noted Engels’ personality and hunger to embrace the challenge at West Ham.
Despite his age, Engels has already thrived at a big club and arrives with two consecutive Scottish league winners’ medals. West Ham are confident his composure and know-how will prove vital in their Championship campaign.
Engels eyes swift Premier League comeback
Engels admitted the West Ham project appealed to him, citing an immediate return to the Premier League as the club’s clear ambition.
The Belgian international added that he is determined to contribute to that objective and collaborate with the fans to grind out victories throughout the season.
His debut chance arrives against Charlton at the London Stadium on 22 August, following his absence from the opening league match at Burnley this Sunday.
