Tottenham Hotspur missed the opportunity to secure Premier League survival after a damaging defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, leaving their future in the division unresolved heading into the last weekend of the campaign.
Victory would have guaranteed safety for Spurs, while even a draw was expected to be enough because of their stronger goal difference compared with West Ham United. Instead, Roberto de Zerbi’s side remains only two points above the relegation zone before hosting Everton in their final match.
Chelsea, playing under interim boss Calum McFarlane after confirming Xabi Alonso as their next manager from July, moved ahead in the 18th minute. Enzo Fernandez produced a curling effort that beat goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and gave the hosts control of the contest.
Spurs responded poorly after conceding. Mathys Tel came closest before the interval when his header struck the post, but Tottenham otherwise struggled to create meaningful danger during a subdued first-half display.
Santos punishes Spurs as frustration grows
Chelsea tightened their grip midway through the second half when Andrey Santos scored from close range after Randal Kolo Muani lost possession in a dangerous area.
The second goal arrived just as De Zerbi was preparing a triple substitution that included James Maddison, and it left Spurs facing an uphill battle. Tottenham only began to show urgency after falling two goals behind, despite the enormous importance of the match.
Richarlison reduced the deficit with 16 minutes remaining and briefly revived hopes of an equaliser that could have transformed the relegation picture. Chelsea, however, held firm as the tension increased in the closing stages.
Tottenham’s anger centered on a late incident involving Marc Cucurella and Micky van de Ven. Cucurella was booked for pulling the defender down at a corner, but no penalty was awarded because officials ruled the ball had not yet entered play. Spurs players surrounded referee Stuart Attwell after the final whistle to protest the decision.
Survival hopes now rest on Everton clash
Despite the controversy, Tottenham’s overall performance left plenty of concerns. After starting brightly, they faded badly once Chelsea took the lead and failed to produce enough attacking quality for much of the evening.
Their top-flight future will now be determined on the final day when Everton visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs still hold the advantage because of their points tally and goal difference, but poor home form this season has increased anxiety around the decisive fixture.
A draw should almost certainly keep Tottenham in the Premier League, although the pressure surrounding the occasion has intensified following another disappointing result.
Meanwhile, West Ham remain within touching distance and will hope Spurs stumble in the closing round of matches.
Fernandez leads Chelsea’s push for Europe
Fernandez once again proved influential for Chelsea with the excellent finish that opened the scoring and set the tone for a deserved victory. The Argentine midfielder has remained one of the club’s standout performers during a turbulent campaign.
Earlier in the season, Fernandez received a two-match internal suspension during Liam Rosenior’s spell in charge after publicly questioning his long-term future at Stamford Bridge. Even so, his ability and influence have rarely been doubted when fully committed.
Incoming manager Alonso is expected to inherit a talented squad that has underperformed, and Fernandez could become one of the central figures in Chelsea’s next chapter if he embraces the project.
The victory lifted Chelsea into eighth place ahead of Brentford on goal difference and strengthened their hopes of qualifying for European competition. McFarlane also secured his first home win as interim coach before Chelsea conclude the season away to Sunderland.
