Tottenham defeats Coventry for first Premier League victory

Tottenham Hotspur secured their maiden Premier League win of the campaign by defeating Coventry City 3-1 at home, moving off the bottom of the standings. James Maddison, in his first league start since April 2025, opened the scoring with a brilliant goal, and Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies added goals after the interval to give Roberto de Zerbi’s team three crucial points.

The outcome moved Spurs from 20th to 16th position, placing them above Coventry on goal difference. The evening also delivered another significant lift as Dejan Kulusevski made his return from a severe knee injury, helping Tottenham end a poor run of home form.

James Maddison drives Tottenham’s first win

Tottenham took only 14 minutes to go ahead after a strong start. Mohammed Kudus set up Maddison, who struck a superb first-time effort into the top corner. The midfielder was making his first Premier League start since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury on 27 April 2025.

Maddison, who started his career at Coventry, made an instant impact against his former club. Spurs looked comfortable for most of the first half, while the visitors struggled to create clear chances and did not manage a shot on target before the break.

Dominic Solanke briefly believed he had doubled Tottenham’s lead after converting Andy Robertson’s pass, but the goal was disallowed because the Scotland captain had been offside before delivering the ball.

Despite their dominance, Spurs went into half-time with only a one-goal advantage. Midfielder Sandro Tonali had already cautioned that the lead was insufficient, telling Sky Sports: “One-nil is not enough for us.” His assessment proved correct soon after the restart.

Omar Marmoush restores Tottenham’s lead

Coventry punished Tottenham for not extending their advantage, equalising five minutes into the second half. Jan Paul van Hecke lost possession, allowing Jack Rudoni to move down the left. After his initial shooting chance was blocked, the ball came back to him, and he finished well to make it 1-1.

The equaliser threatened to increase pressure on Spurs, whose first six league matches had yielded three draws and three defeats. However, the home side responded in the 58th minute through Marmoush, who scored his first goal for Tottenham since joining on loan from Manchester City in August.

The Egyptian forward drove his effort into the net to restore the hosts’ lead. Coventry players protested because Marmoush had caught Milan van Ewijk in the face with an elbow before shooting, but the officials allowed the goal to stand, judging the contact accidental.

Marmoush’s goal proved decisive as Coventry failed to find another equaliser. Ben Davies then completed the scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time, sending a low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the corner to confirm a 3-1 victory.

Dejan Kulusevski’s return provides a major boost

Tottenham’s win was made even more encouraging by Kulusevski’s return to action. The Sweden forward had not played since sustaining a serious knee injury during the 2-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace on 11 May 2025.

Both Kulusevski and Maddison suffered knee injuries towards the end of the 2024-25 campaign, meaning they missed Tottenham’s Europa League final victory. Kulusevski subsequently sat out the entirety of the following season, making his comeback particularly significant.

Spurs supporters made their excitement clear when Kulusevski warmed up during the first half. They repeatedly sang his name before he entered the match as an 85th-minute substitute, receiving one of the loudest receptions of the evening.

There were, however, some concerns for De Zerbi, with Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo suffering injuries. Marmoush also limped off when he was replaced by Kulusevski, leaving Tottenham with potential fitness issues despite the positive result.

Coventry loses momentum after successive victories

Frank Lampard’s side arrived in north London with confidence after beating Nottingham Forest and recording an impressive 4-1 home victory over Newcastle the previous week. They had won their previous two Premier League matches and were looking to continue their progress against a Tottenham team struggling near the foot of the table.

Coventry showed some early attacking intent, with Brandon Thomas-Asante finding space inside the opening 20 seconds before his dangerous cross was intercepted by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto also had an effort deflected over by Van Hecke, while Micky van de Ven produced a superb sliding challenge to deny Thomas-Asante a shooting opportunity.

Rudoni’s equaliser offered hope, but Coventry struggled to build on it after Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead. Despite enjoying plenty of possession late in the game, the visitors managed only one shot on target and rarely threatened to rescue a point.

The defeat left Coventry 17th in the table, just below Tottenham on goal difference. Lampard’s team now face two important home fixtures this month, hosting Fulham on Saturday before welcoming Sunderland seven days later.

For Spurs, the victory ended a miserable sequence at home. It was only their sixth win in 37 Premier League matches on their own ground, but the combination of three points, Maddison’s return to form and Kulusevski’s comeback offered reasons for optimism after a difficult start.
