Kasper Schmeichel has confirmed he will retire from football when his contract with Celtic F.C. expires in June after a shoulder injury brought his final season to an early conclusion.
The 39-year-old goalkeeper has not featured since Celtic’s 2-1 home defeat against Hibernian F.C. in February. Although the Glasgow side later secured the Premiership title, Schmeichel was unable to return to action because of the injury.
Speaking to Danish outlet TV 2 Sport, the veteran stopper explained that medical advice played a decisive role in his choice to walk away from the game. Schmeichel said specialists and surgeons warned him against expecting a return to top-level football, leading him to conclude that the timing was right to finish his career.
Career shaped under famous family name
Schmeichel entered professional football carrying major expectations as the son of legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. He began his journey in the academy setup at Manchester City F.C. before eventually building a strong reputation elsewhere.
His most successful spell came during an 11-year stay with Leicester City F.C., where he became one of the club’s key figures. Schmeichel played an important role in Leicester’s remarkable 2015/16 Premier League triumph and later helped the club win the FA Cup in 2021.
Following his departure from Leicester in 2022, the Dane continued his career with OGC Nice, R.S.C. Anderlecht, and Celtic before the injury eventually brought an end to his time on the pitch.
International career leaves lasting mark
At the international level, Schmeichel represented Denmark on 120 occasions, placing him among the nation’s most capped players. His appearance tally leaves him only nine matches behind his father’s total for the national side.
The goalkeeper currently stands as Denmark’s fifth-highest appearance maker, underlining the longevity and consistency he maintained throughout his international career. His retirement closes a chapter that stretched across club football in several countries and more than a century of appearances for his national team.
