Schalke produced a determined performance to hold Bayern Munich to a 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga Matchday 2 Topspiel, finally ending a 12-game losing streak against the Rekordmeister.
The hosts kept Bayern under control during a tactical first half, while both goalkeepers made important contributions. Despite Bayern’s attacking changes after the break, Schalke maintained their defensive organisation to secure a valuable point.
It was also the first Bundesliga match at Veltins Arena since 2023, with Schalke staying disciplined throughout the contest.
Schalke holds Bayern in the tactical first half
With Michael Olise and Harry Kane starting on the bench, Bayern struggled to create clear opportunities early on. The best chance fell to Luis Díaz, who was played through by a fine pass from Nathaniel Brown but could not beat Loris Karius.
Brown, operating in the advanced role given to him by Vincent Kompany, also tested Karius. The 33-year-old goalkeeper parried the effort away as Schalke remained cautious in their approach.
Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was also called into action, saving Adil Aouchiche’s harmless free-kick.
Schalke’s disciplined approach allowed them to reach half-time without conceding, keeping the Rekordmeister scoreless in a closely contested opening period.
Bayern attack fails to break Schalke defense
Kompany introduced Harry Kane for the second half, while the double substitution before the hour mark changed the flow of the match. Jamal Musiala made his first competitive appearance of the season, and Michael Olise immediately made an impact after coming onto the pitch.
Bayern’s attack began to produce more promising moments in the final third, but Schalke continued to hold their own. Miron Muslić’s side remained faithful to the defensive organisation that had helped them win promotion to the Bundesliga.
Kane came close to breaking the deadlock, but Karius produced the best save of the match to deny him.
Schalke are still waiting for their first goal of the season, yet their defensive performance was enough to restrict Bayern to fewer chances and preserve the goalless draw.

The result ended Schalke’s 12-game losing streak against Bayern and gave the hosts a point from a demanding Bundesliga encounter.
Schalke’s next assignment comes in the opening fixture of Matchday 3, when they travel to Union Berlin.
