Raphinha double helps Barcelona secure dominant victory against Villa

Unai Emery experienced yet another frustrating night against Barcelona as Aston Villa fell to a 3-0 loss in the Champions League. Lamine Yamal scored early before Raphinha added two more after the break, bringing his season total to 19 goals in only 13 matches.

The outcome was especially tough for Emery, who marked his 55th birthday with another defeat at a venue that has often been unkind to him. The Spaniard has now lost 15 of his 16 trips to face Barcelona, including the famous 6-1 loss with Paris Saint-Germain nine years ago, even though his team had a 4-0 lead from the first leg.

Aston Villa’s Champions League run meets a Barcelona challenge

With Villa supporter Prince William watching, the match was a significant test in the club’s growth under Emery’s four-year tenure. The loss ended their perfect start in the Champions League league phase, though the visitors had enough chances before half-time to make things much harder for Barcelona.

Despite the scoreline, Villa is still in a strong position to push for a top-eight finish, with several favorable fixtures ahead. However, their defensive errors against one of Europe’s most dangerous attacks proved very costly.

Barcelona took control after just seven minutes. Villa tried to play out from a goal kick, but Joao Gomes gave the ball away directly to Yamal. The young player made no mistake, curling a shot into the corner from 12 yards.

Barcelona takes advantage despite Villa’s first-half opportunities

Villa responded well and nearly equalized immediately from back-to-back corners. Matty Cash saw a low effort deflected wide at the far post, and then Gomes had a close-range attempt brilliantly blocked by Joao Cancelo.

Emery’s team gradually found ways past Barcelona’s high defensive line. Nicolas Jackson broke down the right in the 19th minute and set up Johan Manzambi, but the midfielder missed the target. Jackson threatened again after getting behind the defense, but goalkeeper Joan Garcia rushed out to make a key foot tackle.

Villa kept creating chances, with Manzambi driving into the box before Garcia stopped him as well. At the other end, Zion Suzuki briefly put his team under pressure with a shaky pass from the back but recovered to save Anthony Gordon‘s attempt.

Those missed chances ultimately made the difference. Villa showed they could trouble Barcelona, but their failure to convert promising moments left them exposed when the hosts extended their lead.

Raphinha nets twice to confirm Barcelona’s win

Barcelona scored again seven minutes into the second half. Fermin Lopez found Raphinha on the edge of the box, and the Brazilian’s shot took a crucial deflection off Pau Torres’ heel before going in.

The hosts added a third in the 64th minute, with Cancelo getting past John McGinn before crossing into the penalty area. Raphinha was perfectly placed six yards from goal and finished easily to complete his double, extending his impressive scoring run to 19 goals in 13 appearances this season.

Villa tried to respond, and Leon Goretzka came close with a glancing header that hit the post. However, Barcelona stayed in control as the match neared its end.

Yamal threatens again as Villa falls to a heavy loss

Another misplaced pass from Suzuki then exposed Boubacar Kamara, though the goalkeeper prevented Fermin from adding a fourth by saving his follow-up effort.

Yamal also had chances to increase Barcelona’s lead, narrowly missing with two more attempts. The teenager’s impact was already clear, as his opening goal came on a night when he further emphasized his place in Champions League history as the competition’s highest-scoring teenager.

For Villa, the result was a disappointing finish to their unbeaten start in the league phase. Their attacking play gave hope, but missed chances and defensive mistakes ultimately allowed Barcelona to earn a convincing win.
