Micky van de Ven has put pen to paper on a fresh long-term agreement with Tottenham, with the Dutch international expressing his belief in the club’s future path.
The 25-year-old arrived at Spurs from Wolfsburg in 2023, with his previous contract set to expire in 2029. His choice to prolong his tenure came after weighing up his options in north London prior to Roberto de Zerbi’s arrival in March.
Van de Ven credits the Italian coach’s influence as a decisive factor in staying at Tottenham, where he has already secured Europa League glory and assumed the captain’s armband during a testing Premier League season.
Van de Ven pledges future to Spurs
“From day one, this place has felt like home,” Van de Ven remarked. “The supporters, the atmosphere, the way I’ve grown as a player – it all fits. The club has a clear vision, and I want to be part of that journey. I’m eager for what lies ahead.”
Since his switch from the Bundesliga, Van de Ven has featured 96 times across all competitions for Tottenham. He has also collected 24 international caps for the Netherlands and represented his nation at this summer’s World Cup.
The centre-back was instrumental in Spurs’ Europa League triumph in 2025. He also led the team as captain during the final six fixtures of the previous campaign, helping the club stave off relegation from the top flight.
De Zerbi’s project wins Van de Ven’s trust
De Zerbi has been vocal about Van de Ven’s importance, hailing him as “a top-class defender on the European stage” and a vital cog in Tottenham’s machinery.
“We’re crafting something special, and players like Micky are the foundation of that vision,” the Spurs boss stated.
Tottenham have finished 17th in the Premier League for two consecutive seasons, narrowly escaping the drop on the final day of the 2025-26 campaign. Yet their summer spending has been aggressive, with a total outlay of £237m.
That figure includes a club-record £100m acquisition of Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, highlighting the scale of investment as Spurs gear up for the new term.
Maddison offers fitness reassurance
James Maddison has given Tottenham fans a boost with a positive update on his condition. The England midfielder says he is “in good shape” as he prepares for the upcoming season.
Maddison has not featured in any pre-season friendlies after sitting out most of the 2025-26 campaign due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in August. He made his comeback against Leeds on 11 May, followed by brief appearances versus Chelsea and Everton.
De Zerbi chose to leave Maddison out of the July pre-season tour, citing the need to avoid unnecessary risk with the player’s recovery.
The 29-year-old has now brushed aside concerns of a setback, posting on Instagram: “Feeling strong after another solid session with the lads today. Putting in the work to be fit and have a big season. No recurrence of any previous injury – that’s clear.”
