Celtic opened their Scottish Premiership title defence with a victory over Dundee, and while Benjamin Nygren scored the decisive goal, Kieran Tierney once again proved his importance to the champions.
Tierney supplied the cross for Nygren’s winning header and delivered another influential display at left-back. His contribution came on a difficult evening in which Dundee frustrated Celtic before the hosts eventually found the breakthrough.

Nygren’s winning goal came from a precise cross by Tierney, whose attacking influence was evident throughout the match.
The left-back recorded more shots on target than any of his teammates with two efforts, created four chances, and delivered eight crosses, the highest total among Celtic players.
BBC Scotland chief sports writer Tom English praised Tierney’s display, saying the defender looked back to his best after another energetic performance at both ends of the pitch.

Tierney finished last season with 12 assists, more than any other Celtic player, while also scoring six goals from defence.
Only Daizen Maeda created more big chances for Celtic during the previous campaign, while Tierney also remained one of the league’s leading defenders for tackling, clearances, and blocked shots.
Although his minutes have been managed, only three full-backs across the Scottish Premiership played more league matches, even though Tierney completed the full 90 minutes on just 10 occasions.
Martin O’Neill wants cover for Kieran Tierney
Manager Martin O’Neill described Tierney and captain Callum McGregor as the backbone of Celtic and said he was delighted to have both players at the club.
With Marcelo Sarrachi having returned to Boca Juniors, Celtic currently have no other senior left-back in the squad. O’Neill admitted the club is looking to strengthen that position because Tierney is unlikely to play every match.
The manager explained that Tierney missed parts of games last season while recovering, adding that the club is actively searching for additional cover.
Spanish interest fails to change Celtic stance
Reports have linked Osasuna with an interest in Tierney, although the same reports suggested Celtic have no intention of accepting offers for the 29-year-old.
Former captain Scott Brown dismissed suggestions that Tierney could leave, saying the defender loves the club and praising his passion, commitment, and quality. Brown also highlighted the importance of Tierney, Callum McGregor, and James Forrest as experienced figures within the squad.
Brown also spoke positively about McGregor’s condition after his retirement from international football, describing him as a leader and encouraging young players to learn from McGregor, Tierney, and Forrest.
