Manchester United’s search for a new defensive midfielder has suffered a setback after Aston Villa reached an agreement to sign one of the club’s reported transfer targets. United have been looking to strengthen the middle of the pitch with greater energy and mobility following the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
Reports last week suggested the Old Trafford side had contacted Wolverhampton Wanderers regarding Joao Gomes. The Brazilian had emerged as an option after Ederson was unable to complete a move because he failed medical examinations and returned to Atalanta.
The same reports also stated that United explored the possibility of signing Gomes during the winter transfer window. However, those plans reportedly collapsed following Ruben Amorim’s unexpected departure.
Agreement leaves United empty-handed
Aston Villa have now acted decisively by securing an agreement with Wolves for the 25-year-old midfielder before United could complete a deal.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the transfer has been agreed verbally in a package worth up to £38 million, consisting of a €40 million fee plus €5 million in performance-related bonuses.
Romano also revealed that Gomes has already left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal and is preparing to finalise his switch to Villa.
Tielemans’ departure prompts Villa response
Villa’s pursuit of Gomes appears to have been driven by Manchester United’s successful move for Youri Tielemans. Although the Midlands club wanted to keep one of their key midfield figures, United activated the Belgian international’s £35 million release clause after persuading him to join the club.
The signing of Tielemans left Villa needing to reinforce their midfield, with Gomes now lined up as the player expected to fill that vacancy.
Tielemans bids farewell before Old Trafford switch
Earlier in the day, Tielemans shared an emotional farewell with Aston Villa supporters and staff through a message on Instagram. He thanked everyone involved in his three-year spell, including his teammates, Damian Vidagany and Unai Emery, while expressing his appreciation for the trust shown in him and the role they played in his personal and professional development.
The Belgian departs Villa after making 134 appearances and helping the club end a 44-year wait for a European trophy. His move to Manchester United also fulfils what has been described as his dream transfer to Old Trafford.
