Haaland leads Norway into knockout stage with Senegal victory

Norway secured a place in the World Cup last 32 after defeating Senegal in New Jersey, with Erling Haaland once again playing the leading role. The Manchester City forward struck twice in the second half to guide his country to a second consecutive win and confirm progression from Group I alongside France.

The result continued an extraordinary run for Haaland, who has now scored four times in only two matches at the tournament. No other Norwegian player has managed more than two goals in World Cup history, making the striker the nation’s outright leading scorer on football’s biggest stage.

Norway seize control before Haaland takes over

The Scandinavian side was the stronger team for much of the contest, although the opening period was often fragmented. Their breakthrough arrived late in the first half when Marcus Pedersen, introduced earlier as a substitute, benefited from a misplaced clearance by Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly and converted the opportunity to give Norway the advantage.

Shortly after the restart, Norway doubled their lead through Haaland. Martin Odegaard delivered a precise pass through the defence, and the striker raced clear before finishing confidently. The goal not only strengthened Norway’s position in the match but also elevated Haaland to the top of his country’s World Cup scoring charts.

Senegal responded through Ismaila Sarr, whose goal briefly reduced the deficit and revived hopes of a comeback. However, those hopes were quickly dented when Haaland struck again only five minutes later, directing a controlled volley against the crossbar and into the net to restore a two-goal margin.

Senegal push back but fall short

Despite trailing by two goals once more, Senegal continued to fight and remained a threat during the closing stages. Sarr found the net again deep into stoppage time, creating tension in the final moments and setting up a dramatic finish.

The Crystal Palace winger almost rescued a point in the dying seconds when he met a late delivery inside the penalty area. However, his header drifted over the crossbar, allowing Norway to preserve their lead and secure all three points.

While the scoreline remained close until the end, Norway had largely controlled proceedings and created the better opportunities throughout the evening. Their overall performance justified the result and ensured qualification with one group match still to play.

Haaland continues remarkable scoring streak

The tournament has provided another platform for Haaland to showcase his finishing ability. With goals in 12 successive competitive appearances for Norway, he has established a remarkable level of consistency for the national team.

Even before scoring, the forward demonstrated his influence against Senegal. During the first half he produced an intelligent pass to release Odegaard in a promising position, although the chance went unfinished. Later, after winning possession from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Haaland struck the post when a goal appeared likely.

Those missed opportunities mattered little once the second half began. His first finish capped a swift counterattack, while the second displayed composure and technique as he scored with a side-footed volley. By the final whistle, the only thing missing from his performance was a hat-trick.

With at least two more matches guaranteed, Haaland will have further opportunities to add to his growing World Cup tally and continue his impressive form.

Final group games ahead

Norway’s final Group I fixture will see them face France on Friday. Both nations have already secured qualification and will battle for first place in the standings.

Senegal, meanwhile, take on Iraq knowing that only a victory will keep alive their hopes of progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

The outcome of those matches will complete the Group I picture, but Norway have already achieved their immediate objective thanks to another decisive contribution from their star striker.
