Ecuador stun Germany to book place in World Cup knockout stage

Ecuador secured a place in the World Cup last 32 after recovering from an early setback to defeat Germany in New Jersey, earning a potential knockout meeting with England.

The South Americans entered the match without a goal in the tournament, having drawn with Curacao before losing to Ivory Coast. Despite those struggles, they produced an impressive display against a German side that had already guaranteed top spot in Group E.

The outcome also dealt a blow to Scotland’s hopes of progressing, as Ecuador’s victory reduced their chances of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Fast German start overturned

Germany took the lead after only two minutes when Florian Wirtz threaded a pass into the penalty area for Leroy Sane, who finished confidently beyond Hernan Galindez.

Ecuador immediately protested, believing Pedro Vite had been fouled after Alexandar Pavlovic raised his boot too high in the build-up. Their appeals were dismissed, but the controversial moment appeared to inspire the team rather than discourage them.

Backed by a large and passionate group of supporters dressed in yellow, Ecuador responded with purpose. Their persistence paid off seven minutes later when Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo drove a low shot beyond Manuel Neuer to restore parity.

Ecuador complete memorable turnaround

The intensity shown by Ecuador continued throughout the second half as they pushed for a winner against a Germany side that struggled to match their energy.

With 13 minutes remaining, Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest from a corner, reaching the ball before Neuer to score the decisive goal and spark huge celebrations among the Ecuador fans inside the stadium.

During the closing stages, Ecuador defended resolutely to protect their advantage. Angulo remained a constant threat throughout the contest and was rewarded with the man-of-the-match award after playing a leading role in his side’s success.

Celebration for Ecuador, disappointment for Germany

The scenes at the final whistle reflected the significance of Ecuador’s achievement after recovering from the worst possible start to secure a place in the knockout rounds. Having failed to score in either of their previous matches, they finally demonstrated the attacking quality within the squad, including players such as Moises Caicedo.

Germany, by comparison, delivered an uninspired performance. Having already confirmed first place in the group before kick-off, they lacked the urgency shown by their opponents and were unable to respond after Ecuador completed the comeback.

If Ecuador can reproduce the same level in the knockout phase while continuing to draw energy from the support of their fans, they could prove difficult opponents in the rounds ahead.
