Curacao collected the first World Cup point in their history after holding Ecuador to a goalless draw in Group E. The result owed much to an outstanding display from goalkeeper Eloy Room, whose performance frustrated the South American side throughout the match.
The 37-year-old Miami FC goalkeeper produced 15 saves, matching the World Cup record set by United States goalkeeper Tim Howard in 2014. Room was called into action almost immediately, denying Enner Valencia from close range after only three minutes, and he continued to repel Ecuador’s attacks for the remainder of the contest.
Despite facing relentless pressure, Curacao emerged with a historic result and kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Room shines in record-equalling display
Ecuador created opportunities from the opening whistle and repeatedly tested the Curacao goalkeeper. Room stopped efforts from Valencia and John Yeboah during the first half, finishing the opening period with six saves.
His workload increased after the interval as Ecuador pushed harder in search of a breakthrough. Moises Caicedo, Pedro Vite, Kevin Rodriguez, Nilson Angulo, and Gonzalo Plata were among the players denied by the veteran keeper as he preserved the clean sheet.
Curacao also managed to threaten at the other end. Around the hour mark, Leandro Bacuna saw his attempt saved, while Liviana Comenencia was also prevented from finding the net.
Ecuador left searching for answers
The draw leaves Ecuador in a difficult position after collecting only one point from their opening two matches. Their campaign began with a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast, and they were unable to turn their dominance against Curacao into a victory.
Although Ecuador finished with 27 shots and an expected-goals figure of 3.05, they failed to score for a second consecutive game. Across their first two World Cup matches, they have registered 39 attempts without finding the back of the net.
Head coach Sebastian Beccacece has overseen a team known for defensive strength. Ecuador has conceded only eight goals in his 21 matches in charge, helped by defenders such as Arsenal’s Piero HincapiĆ© and Paris St-Germain’s Willian Pacho. However, their defensive stability has not been matched by attacking efficiency, having scored only 14 goals in 18 qualifying fixtures before arriving at the tournament.
Final group matches to decide qualification
Ecuador now faces a crucial meeting with group winners Germany in New Jersey on 25 June. Victory is required if they are to advance to the knockout rounds, although they must overcome a side that has already secured first place in the group.
Curacao, meanwhile, will take on Ivory Coast in Philadelphia on the same day. Despite suffering a 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening match, they remain in contention for a place in the last 32.
The final round of Group E fixtures will determine whether Curacao can continue their remarkable World Cup journey and whether Ecuador can recover from a goal drought that has put their tournament future in jeopardy.
