Cristian Romero has officially ended his time at Tottenham following five years in north London, as the Argentina defender makes the switch to Atletico Madrid under the guidance of Diego Simeone.
The center-back, who wore the captain’s armband for Spurs last season, moves on for a reported transfer fee of £34.2 million. Romero played a key role in Tottenham’s backline, though fitness issues restricted his game time during a season where the team narrowly escaped relegation from the top flight.

Romero’s last outing for Tottenham took place away at Sunderland during Roberto De Zerbi’s debut match as manager. Spurs fell to a 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light back in April.
The Argentine then went on to reach the World Cup final with his national team earlier in the summer, but the reigning champions were edged out 1-0 by Spain in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Romero now leaves Tottenham after the club secured Micky van de Ven with a new long-term deal and added Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi to their squad. His next challenge awaits at Atletico Madrid, where he will play under Simeone’s system.
