Chelsea have entered into negotiations to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson and Brighton striker Danny Welbeck as the club aims to add seasoned professionals to its roster before the upcoming campaign.
This move indicates a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy after the organization recognized that its previous focus on acquiring younger players needs modifications. The Blues are now seeking a blend of established Premier League know-how and up-and-coming talent.
Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck discussions progress
Chelsea are engaged in talks for Henderson, who has just one season left on his Brentford contract. Brentford are prepared to let the 36-year-old England international depart without a transfer fee.
The Blues are also confident about securing a deal for 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck, who is eager to make the move to Stamford Bridge.
Brighton has not commented on the matter. Welbeck signed a one-year contract extension in March, which keeps him at the club through the 2026-27 season.
Chelsea’s transfer strategy pivots toward seasoned players
Chelsea’s interest in Henderson and Welbeck follows remarks from influential owner Behdad Eghbali in April, when he admitted that the club’s approach of signing younger players required a “tweak.”
The club also previously tried to sign 33-year-old Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, but the Black Cats declined to sell the Switzerland captain.
Although Chelsea recently completed a club-record signing of Morgan Rogers, the 23-year-old also brings substantial Premier League experience, while the Blues are nearing a deal for center-back Maxence Lacroix.
Chelsea’s attacking lineup faces unclear future
Welbeck’s potential addition would heighten competition in Chelsea’s forward line, where Joao Pedro is considered the club’s primary striker.
Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson are also under contract, though the futures of several players remain uncertain. Guiu is available for a permanent transfer or a loan, with Chelsea valuing him at around £25 million.
Jackson, who has returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is open to leaving despite earlier expectations he would stay, while Delap is increasingly likely to move on after hoping to establish himself under Xabi Alonso. Emegha, meanwhile, is expected to remain after only recently joining from Strasbourg.
Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson bring established quality
Welbeck had the most productive league season of his career last term, scoring 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for Brighton. Since joining from Watford in 2020, he has netted 51 goals in 201 matches for the club.
Henderson made 34 appearances across all competitions for Brentford after arriving from Ajax and also featured once as a substitute for England at the World Cup before suffering a broken arm during the tournament.
