Bournemouth kicked off their maiden European adventure with a memorable 2-1 away win over Real Sociedad, withstanding a fierce second-half fightback from the Spanish club to take all three points.
Justin Kluivert and Rayan fired Bournemouth into a two-goal lead after a commanding first 45 minutes in which their high pressing caused Sociedad endless trouble. Sergio Gomez reduced the arrears just before the hour, but the Cherries weathered heavy pressure to secure a famous win.
Bournemouth impress on European debut
The visitors began brightly in an end-to-end contest, with both sides finding promising positions early. Bournemouth went ahead in the 11th minute when Kluivert finished a slick move involving Adrien Truffert.
The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but the video assistant referee stepped in. After a two-minute check, Kluivert was shown to have been behind the ball when Truffert delivered from the corner of the box, so the goal was awarded.
Bournemouth soon doubled their lead. Alex Scott spotted Rayan’s run in behind the defence with a superb pass, and the Brazilian winger headed the ball into the far corner.
The Cherries nearly grabbed a third before the break when Evanilson met Marcus Tavernier’s free-kick with a powerful header. The ball hit the inside of the far post before rebounding into play, while the increasingly frustrated hosts were drawn into a more physical battle late in the half.
Real Sociedad respond after the break
Real Sociedad emerged from half-time with a different mindset and pushed Bournemouth back as the visitors started to show signs of tiredness following their intense first-half display.
The hosts halved the deficit shortly before the hour when Sergio Gomez whipped in an inswinging cross from the right that eluded everyone and nestled in the far corner.
The goal restored Sociedad’s belief, while Bournemouth were forced to focus more and more on protecting their advantage. The Cherries’ defence came under repeated pressure as the home side hunted an equaliser.
Bournemouth did not always look completely assured under that pressure, but they repeatedly kept Sociedad from finding a second goal. When the defence was breached, goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic provided vital cover.
Bournemouth hold on for Europa League victory
Petrovic made a series of important saves to keep Bournemouth ahead, with his most impressive stop coming in stoppage time when he produced a superb reaction save to deny Orri Oskarsson.
That late intervention proved decisive as Bournemouth clung on for a 2-1 win. Their European debut thus ended with a result the club could celebrate after having to overcome a very different challenge in the second half.
The contrast between the two periods was stark. Bournemouth controlled much of the opening half through crisp passing, aggressive pressing, and movement, but after the interval their performance became mainly about resilience.
The win also sets up a reunion on Sunday when Bournemouth welcomes Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool. After making history with their first European match, the Cherries can now turn their attention to that domestic meeting.
