Arsenal defeat Liverpool to go three points clear at the top

Arsenal reinforced their place at the summit of the Premier League by securing a hard-earned win against Liverpool at Anfield. A first-half strike from Kai Havertz proved to be the difference, enabling Mikel Arteta’s team to capitalise on Manchester City’s loss to Brighton and establish a three-point advantage in the title chase.

The Gunners spent large portions of the game defending against Liverpool’s offensive onslaught, yet their well-organised display earned them a first Premier League triumph at Anfield since 2012. Liverpool, on the other hand, stay fifth and now trail the leaders by nine points.

Havertz’s goal secures Arsenal win over Liverpool

Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Declan Rice delivered the ball across the goalmouth and Havertz finished at the far post. The early goal put the visitors ahead, but they could not capitalise further as Liverpool answered with relentless attacking pressure.

The home side nearly levelled when David Raya just got to Virgil van Dijk’s glancing touch before Alexander Isak could reach the ball. Liverpool also saw two penalty claims turned down, while Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar from a free-kick.

Liverpool kept dominating possession and territory early in the second half, but Arsenal’s defensive structure improved and restricted the chances available to the hosts. The arrival of Myles Lewis-Skelly later helped the Gunners recover their rhythm, and Alisson produced a superb one-handed stop to keep out Christos Tzolis after a first-time strike toward the far corner.

Havertz’s goal ultimately proved the difference between the sides, handing Arsenal all three points and a meaningful edge in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal defence thwarts Liverpool’s attack

The game was essentially a battle between Liverpool’s offensive pressure and Arsenal’s capacity to resist it. Arteta’s men stayed disciplined and held their defensive shape despite facing repeated waves of attacks, especially in the first half.

Though the Gunners endured some uncomfortable moments before the interval, they kept their composure against Liverpool’s aggressive pressing. Their defensive showing was particularly crucial following the surprise Carabao Cup loss to League Two outfit Fleetwood Town in midweek.

Liverpool registered 17 attempts on goal but could not manage a single shot on target. That figure underlined Arsenal’s defensive solidity and helped explain why the hosts were unable to convert their attacking dominance into an equaliser.

The final whistle sparked celebrations from Arteta and his players, who had claimed a valuable away win and moved three points clear at the top of the table.

Liverpool impresses but lacks cutting edge

Despite the loss, Liverpool delivered an energetic display that gave their fans reason for encouragement. The attacking pace and pressing style associated with Andoni Iraola’s evolving side were especially noticeable in the first half, when Arsenal found it difficult to escape the hosts’ pressure.

Liverpool felt they should have been given penalties on two occasions. Jurrien Timber pulled Isak’s shirt inside the area, while Cody Gakpo went to ground after a tussle with Christos Tzolis, but neither appeal led to a spot-kick.

However, Liverpool were unable to make their attacking efforts pay off. Isak, who has netted six Premier League goals this season, was notably quiet, and the team overall lacked the clinical finishing required to convert their pressure into goals.

The result leaves Liverpool fifth and nine points adrift of Arsenal. Nonetheless, this was only their second defeat of the campaign, and their performance indicated there were still grounds for optimism despite passing up the chance to narrow the gap at the top.
