Bazoumana Toure completes rapid rise with £43m Newcastle switch

Bazoumana Toure could hardly hide his happiness after completing a £43m transfer from Hoffenheim to Newcastle United. The 20-year-old Ivory Coast forward has taken another significant step in a career that has developed at remarkable speed, fulfilling his ambition of reaching the Premier League.

Former Hammarby captain Nahir Besara said Toure’s cheerful nature has remained unchanged regardless of circumstances. According to Besara, the winger always arrived with a smile and a willingness to work, whether things were going well or badly.

The move continues an impressive journey that began with his switch from ASEC Mimosas to Swedish club Hammarby in 2024. Just a year later he secured a transfer to Hoffenheim, and after only 18 months in Germany he was travelling by private jet to Tyneside to begin the next chapter of his career.

Gratitude has never left him

Besara recalled a gesture from Toure that left a lasting impression before the player departed Hammarby. On the eve of his transfer, Toure sent him money as a gift to thank him for his support, although Besara immediately returned it.

For Besara, the act reflected the player’s character more than anything else. He explained that while Toure wanted to express his appreciation, he felt equally grateful because the young forward had contributed so much to the club during his time there.

Hammarby sporting director Mikael Hjelmberg shared a similar opinion after bringing Toure to Europe. He admitted he “fell in love” with the player after watching him represent ASEC Mimosas, saying it was not only his footballing qualities but also his permanently positive personality that stood out.

Newcastle find the winger they wanted

Newcastle identified Toure as a priority signing after Anthony Gordon completed a £69.3m move to Barcelona in June, leaving the club searching for a new option on the left wing.

Their pursuit became even more important after Victor Munoz chose Liverpool instead of Newcastle following his departure from Osasuna. At the same time, Newcastle agreed to sell midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth up to £100m, creating additional room within football’s financial regulations to strengthen several positions.

The club believes Toure matches the profile they have been looking for throughout the summer. Young, ambitious, and eager to join Newcastle, he arrives after a period in which the club had experienced several disappointments in the transfer market. Those who know him also believe he has the potential to develop even further in the right environment.

Qualities that convinced Newcastle

Toure’s performances at Hoffenheim highlighted both his attacking ability and his willingness to contribute without the ball. Among Bundesliga forwards during the 2025-26 season, he finished first for successful crosses with 39, joint second for assists with nine, joint third for completed dribbles with 48, fourth for chances created with 45, and fourth for big chances created with 11.

Besara believes one of the player’s greatest strengths is how quickly he responds to coaching. He remembered a match in which Hammarby’s coach instructed Toure the day before kick-off to attack the near post with his head. Having never previously scored a header for the club, he went on to score twice in that manner during the game.

His ability to absorb tactical instructions has also improved the defensive side of his game. During his final league campaign with Hoffenheim, Toure won 152 duels and regained possession 127 times.

Even so, Newcastle recognise that another adjustment lies ahead. The Premier League will demand more physically and tactically, while Toure still has aspects of his finishing to improve and must adapt to Eddie Howe’s system. However, after successfully settling in every new environment so far, Besara remains convinced the winger will thrive, insisting he is certain Toure will become a major success.
