Barcelona switch striker target after Álvarez setback

Barcelona are planning to bring in a new central forward this summer following the confirmed departure of Robert Lewandowski. The club’s intention is to add a high-profile number nine who can compete for the starting role alongside Ferran Torres.

For several months, the main focus of their recruitment strategy has been Atlético Madrid and Argentina forward Julián Álvarez, with internal optimism at times that a deal could eventually be reached despite resistance from the Spanish capital club.

Álvarez deal Becomes increasingly complicated

According to Sport, Barcelona now believe that signing Álvarez is effectively out of reach. Atlético Madrid are holding firm and are reportedly demanding well above €100–110 million for the striker, whom they signed for around €95 million from Manchester City two years ago.

Competition from Paris Saint-Germain has further complicated matters. The French side view Álvarez as a key addition to their attack and are now involved in the race for his signature. Even if the player were to express a desire to leave, Barcelona feel Atlético would still be able to drive up the price due to PSG’s financial strength, leaving the Catalan club at a disadvantage.

Barcelona turn attention to João Pedro

With the Álvarez pursuit losing momentum, Barcelona have begun to explore other options and have shifted their focus toward Chelsea forward João Pedro, who is seen as a more realistic target in the current market.

Financial limitations continue to shape Barcelona’s transfer strategy, restricting their ability to compete freely for elite-level signings. As a result, the club expects a challenging summer window as they try to strengthen for a serious push in the Champions League.
