Xabi Alonso’s future appears to be taking shape after weeks of speculation involving several major European clubs. The Spanish manager had been connected with Milan, particularly as uncertainty surrounded Max Allegri’s position and the possibility of a managerial change in Italy.
Earlier reports suggested the Rossoneri viewed Alonso as a serious option, with prior approaches already made to him in the past. However, despite Milan’s long-standing admiration, more recent updates indicated that Chelsea had moved into pole position in the contest to secure his services.
According to new information from French journalist Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport, the Premier League club have now made decisive progress. Chelsea are said to have reached a handshake agreement with Alonso over personal terms, putting them firmly on course to appoint him for next season.
Sudden Real Madrid dismissal changed Alonso’s path
Alonso has been unattached since January 12, when his time with Real Madrid was unexpectedly brought to an end. His departure came despite a respectable run of results that included 20 wins, three draws, and only five defeats during his spell in charge.
While those numbers reflected strong performances on the pitch, reported disagreements with members of the squad ultimately played a major role in the decision to remove him. The abrupt conclusion to his Madrid experience immediately placed one of Europe’s most highly regarded coaches back on the market.
That availability quickly sparked interest from leading clubs seeking a new direction, with both Milan and Chelsea emerging as prominent contenders for his signature.
Bayer Leverkusen success boosted his reputation
Before his period at Real Madrid, Alonso had significantly elevated his managerial profile through his achievements with Bayer Leverkusen. He guided the German side to an impressive domestic Treble, underlining his tactical reputation and ability to build a winning team.
The only major setback in that remarkable period came on the European stage. Leverkusen fell short in the 2024 Europa League final, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Atalanta, which denied Alonso an even greater accomplishment.
Even so, his work in Germany strengthened his standing across Europe and ensured that top clubs continued to monitor his next move closely.
