Aston Villa has secured a loan deal for Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, with the move set to keep the winger at Villa Park until the end of the 2026-27 season. The agreement includes a mandatory purchase option if certain conditions are fulfilled.
The 22-year-old Argentina international completed his medical in Birmingham and has signed a four-year contract that will activate if the permanent transfer clause is triggered. While neither club disclosed financial details, Chelsea anticipates the conditions will be met with ease, allowing them to secure a fee close to their initial £43m asking price.
Aston Villa finalize Garnacho loan agreement
Garnacho’s move comes after Chelsea restructured their squad following the record £117m acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The winger’s departure occurs less than a year after Chelsea paid £40m to bring him from Manchester United.
Should the transfer become permanent, Manchester United will receive 10% of the final fee as per the terms of Garnacho’s earlier sale.
The winger becomes Villa’s fourth summer signing, joining Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Keba Cisse. Meanwhile, Villa has generated nearly £200m through the exits of Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea, and Lewis Dobbin.
Chelsea’s squad adjustments facilitate transfers
Chelsea allowed Garnacho to leave after his playing time dwindled. The arrivals of Morgan Rogers and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda further necessitated trimming the first-team squad.
During his season at Stamford Bridge, Garnacho scored just one Premier League goal despite featuring in 43 matches across all competitions.
In total, he netted eight goals and provided four assists. Two of his goals came against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, while the others were against Qarabag, Wrexham, Port Vale, and Cardiff City.
Garnacho’s impact limited at Chelsea
Under Liam Rosenior, Garnacho started only nine times in a 29-match stretch that also included Calum McFarlane’s second interim spell at the end of the season.
Some fans questioned his effort as the campaign wore on, and he faced criticism for failing to track opposing players. A notable instance occurred during a home loss to West Ham, where he was substituted at halftime after being involved in the build-up to two goals.
Despite these challenges, sources told BBC Sport that Garnacho remained professional and continued to work diligently behind the scenes, providing optimism for his future.
Garnacho departs Stamford Bridge without drama
In a late-season interview with Premier League Productions, Garnacho admitted to making some “bad mistakes” at Manchester United due to frustration over limited playing time.
Those familiar with Chelsea’s dressing room noted that the winger never fully integrated into the group and often seemed distant.
Nevertheless, his exit was without major conflict. Chelsea simply viewed Garnacho as one of the players they were willing to offload as part of their squad overhaul.
