Wembanyama commits future to Spurs with record rookie extension

Victor Wembanyama has secured his long-term future with the San Antonio Spurs after signing a five-year contract extension with the franchise.

The agreement, according to ESPN, is worth $252m (£188m) and represents the maximum amount available for a player on a rookie scale extension. The deal includes a player option for the final season, while Wembanyama reportedly chose not to include additional clauses that could have increased the value of the contract in order to provide San Antonio with greater financial flexibility.

Before the announcement became official, the 22-year-old sent a message to Spurs supporters on social media, writing: “Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes.”

Wembanyama chooses stability in San Antonio

The French centre, who stands at 7ft 4in, was selected first overall by the Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft and has quickly become one of the league’s leading players.

During the previous season, Wembanyama helped San Antonio reach the NBA Finals, although the team was unable to claim the championship after losing 4-1 to the New York Knicks in the best-of-seven series.

Despite falling short of the title, the campaign marked another major step in the development of the young star, who has established himself as a key figure for the franchise.

Defensive award adds to growing list of achievements

Wembanyama also made history by becoming the youngest player ever to win the NBA defensive player-of-the-year award.

His dominance on the defensive end was reflected in the voting, as he received all 100 first-place votes for the honour. The centre finished the season leading the league in blocks, averaging 3.1 per game.

Alongside his defensive impact, Wembanyama produced impressive offensive numbers throughout the 2025-26 regular season.

Spurs’ cornerstone delivers career-best numbers

In 64 regular-season appearances, Wembanyama recorded personal bests with averages of 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game.

The two-time All-Star’s performances have made him the central figure of San Antonio’s plans, and his new contract ensures the franchise will continue building around him for years to come.
