Sam LaPorta has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the Detroit Lions as he enters the last year of his rookie deal, casting doubt on his long-term future with the organization. The former Pro Bowl tight end is seeking a long-term contract and seems ready to explore alternative opportunities should the two sides fail to come to terms.
Having shown improved form following a significant back injury, LaPorta has positioned himself favorably heading into the offseason. His recent remarks indicate a desire for his contributions to be acknowledged, even if that ultimately means parting ways with Detroit.
Sam LaPorta contract situation with the Lions
LaPorta is currently in the final season of a four-year, $9.47 million rookie contract, with $5.78 million in cash earnings set for this year. Despite being a key piece of the Lions’ offense, he has not yet been offered the extension he is seeking.
During an appearance on Pardon My Take, LaPorta acknowledged that the circumstances have been frustrating, especially considering the physical toll of playing professional football.
“I break my f—–g back for the team, and then I’m going out there this year, and I’m balling, and maybe they’re not showing the love,” he said, referencing the injury that disrupted his previous season and his efforts to regain his form.
LaPorta also stated that he plans to stay professional, leaving negotiations to his agent while continuing to produce on the field.
Lions tight end expects a major payday
The 25-year-old has been fairly open about his readiness to move on if Detroit does not present a long-term offer. He noted that he could find another team willing to compensate him if he reaches free agency.
“In three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good,” LaPorta said. “Yeah, I’ll get paid somewhere else. So whatever.”
Per Spotrac, his current market value is projected at a three-year contract worth $45.1 million. That figure suggests a substantial raise over his rookie deal, whether he signs an extension in Detroit or explores opportunities elsewhere.
Sam LaPorta stats and recent performances
Drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, LaPorta quickly became a vital component of Detroit’s offense. He received Pro Bowl honors in his rookie year and has totaled 213 receptions and 23 touchdowns over 47 regular-season games.
He also made contributions during the Lions’ 2023 playoff run, hauling in 21 of 27 targets for 176 yards and a touchdown.
After a serious back injury kept him out for the second half of the 2025 campaign, LaPorta has regained his form this season. His recent outings have been especially promising, including eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers in Week 5.
He then followed that up by catching all five of his targets for 88 yards and another touchdown in Detroit’s win over the Arizona Cardinals last week.
Lions’ contract talks face an important test
LaPorta’s willingness to speak candidly about his contract could present a challenging situation for Detroit, especially with a major matchup against divisional rivals Green Bay on the horizon. His comments may also shape how potential suitors perceive him if he becomes a free agent.
Nevertheless, his production remains a crucial factor in establishing his future value. If he continues performing at his current level, the tight end should have chances to land a lucrative deal.
For the time being, LaPorta seems focused on football rather than letting negotiations become a distraction. His stance is evident: he seeks a long-term commitment from the Lions, but he is ready to start a new chapter elsewhere if the two sides cannot reach an agreement.
