2026 NFL travel rankings: 49ers brace for historic grind as Panthers enjoy easiest road

The full 2026 NFL schedule will officially be unveiled Thursday night, but even before every matchup is confirmed, enough is already known to identify which franchises will face the heaviest travel demands. With opponents, home-and-away assignments, and the complete international slate already established, Bill Speros of Bookies.com calculated how many miles each team is expected to cover this season by measuring stadium-to-stadium distances.

No organization faces a harsher road path than San Francisco, which is projected to travel 38,105 miles — the highest total in the league and potentially the most ever for an NFL team. Their massive number is driven largely by participation in the league’s first Australia game, along with a Week 11 appearance in Mexico City.

The 49ers are also set to become the first club in league history to play multiple international contests in non-consecutive weeks. According to Speros, they are expected to cross 58 time zones, surpassing the previous record of 42 established by the Chargers last season.

There is one possible wrinkle to that historic total. Noted, if San Francisco’s two eastern road trips — against the Giants and Falcons — are grouped together, the franchise may avoid setting the all-time distance mark. Whether that happens depends entirely on how the league arranges those dates.

Los Angeles teams and several contenders also log major distances

San Francisco is not alone in facing an exhausting season, though its travel burden clearly stands above the rest. The Rams rank second at 34,847 miles, while Houston sits third with 28,470. Dallas and New England round out the top five, each also projected to exceed 27,000 miles.

Miami, the Chargers, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, and Seattle complete the top 10, meaning several playoff-caliber or high-profile teams will spend substantial time in transit throughout the year. The international schedule, expanded to a record nine games, plays a major role in increasing mileage for many franchises.

Across the entire NFL, teams are expected to combine for 628,873 miles traveled in 2026. That total equals 25.2 trips around Earth’s circumference, illustrating just how geographically demanding this season could become.

While some clubs face cross-country and overseas journeys, others benefit from far more manageable paths based on opponent locations and schedule structure.

Carolina lands the easiest path in the league

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Carolina appears to have won what could be called the NFL’s travel lottery. The Panthers are projected to cover only 8,740 miles, the fewest in the league and dramatically less than San Francisco’s total.

The difference is striking: the 49ers are expected to travel 4.4 times farther than Carolina. The Panthers will cross just six time zones all season and are not scheduled to travel farther west than Minneapolis.

For a team coming off an NFC South title — secured last year with an 8-9 record — that favorable setup could be especially meaningful. Carolina already exceeded expectations by reaching the top of the division, and the relatively light travel burden offers another advantage as it looks to build on that momentum.

The franchise also strengthened its roster in free agency by adding former Eagles pass rusher Jaelan Phillips and Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd, giving Carolina additional reason to view its schedule structure as a significant bonus.

League-wide balance shaped by geography and scheduling quirks

Travel totals in 2026 highlight how dramatically the NFL schedule can affect competitive conditions before a single snap is played. International appearances, coast-to-coast road games, and time zone crossings create vastly different physical demands depending on franchise location and opponent rotation.

For San Francisco, this season could become a logistical grind unlike any in league history. For Carolina, the opposite may be true, with one of the softest travel calendars imaginable.

As the complete schedule becomes public, the exact sequence of games will determine whether some clubs can reduce strain through strategic scheduling. But based on what is already known, no team appears to face a tougher road than the 49ers, while few have been handed a bigger scheduling gift than the Panthers.
