Yankees dominate Giants in 2026 season opener despite Judge’s struggles

The New York Yankees kicked off the 2026 MLB season with a decisive victory over the San Francisco Giants, securing a 7-0 win at Oracle Park on Wednesday night. For the fifth consecutive year, the Yankees started their season with a win, while the Giants fell on Opening Day for the sixth time in the past eight seasons. The game also featured the first-ever ABS challenge in Major League Baseball history, although it was unsuccessful.

Yankees jump on Logan Webb early

The Yankees wasted no time putting pressure on Giants ace Logan Webb, scoring five runs in the second inning. At one point, six consecutive batters reached base, including RBI hits from Ryan McMahon and Trent Grisham. Webb, typically dominant, allowed seven runs over five innings—a mark he did not reach in any start last season.

New York’s approach focused on aggressive swings early in the count. The six batters who reached base in that inning saw just 2, 1, 3, 3, 1, and 1 pitch each, demonstrating a plan to avoid extended at-bats and strikeouts. Across the game, the Yankees collected nine hits off Webb, six of which came on the first two pitches of each at-bat. Their second-inning outburst marked the first time Webb had surrendered five runs in a single inning at Oracle Park, and it was New York’s first five-run inning on Opening Day since 2006.

The Yankees added two more runs in the fifth, including a run that scored on a misplayed 3-6-3 double play attempt. Casey Schmitt, usually a third baseman, failed to scoop the ball cleanly, allowing Ben Rice to score. Max Fried, the Yankees’ starter, experienced early difficulties but settled in to retire 15 of the final 16 Giants batters, keeping the shutout intact.

History was made with first ABS challenge

José Caballero made MLB history by calling the first ABS challenge during the first pitch of the fourth inning. However, the strike call was upheld, leaving the challenge unsuccessful. Interestingly, the following pitch was a borderline strike that went unchallenged, illustrating the strategic nature of these new challenges, as teams weigh the importance of each play before using their limited opportunities.

In Wednesday’s matchup, Caballero’s was the only ABS challenge. The Yankees chose not to use their second challenge, and the Giants did not issue a challenge at any point. While this was a rare instance of a game with just one challenge, it set a precedent as teams adapt to the new system throughout the season.

Judge struggles as teammates shine

Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ star outfielder, had a difficult night at the plate, going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. This marked the third four-strikeout Opening Day in Yankees history and the first by a reigning MVP. Despite Judge’s struggles, the rest of the lineup performed efficiently, combining for 10 hits in 31 at-bats, resulting in a .323 team average.

The collective effort of the Yankees’ hitters was enough to dominate Webb and secure a convincing Opening Day win. While Judge’s off-night was notable, it did little to affect New York’s early momentum for the 2026 season.
