Newcastle United were moments away from a memorable Champions League triumph before a stoppage-time penalty from Lamine Yamal earned Barcelona a 1–1 draw in the first leg of their last-16 encounter.
The home side believed they had taken a decisive step towards victory when Harvey Barnes struck late in the match with a first-time finish, sending St. James’ Park into celebration.
However, deep into added time, Barcelona was awarded a spot-kick after substitute Dani Olmo was fouled inside the penalty area by Malick Thiaw.
Yamal calmly converted the penalty in the 96th minute, sending goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way and ensuring the tie remains level ahead of the second leg at the Nou Camp next week.
Electric atmosphere and late breakthrough
Eddie Howe had described the match as the most significant of Newcastle’s recent era, and the occasion carried that weight from the outset.
Supporters created a thunderous pre-match scene, with fireworks lighting the sky and a large banner displayed in the Gallowgate End declaring: “Geordie boys are taking over, Budapest awaits for me.”
Inspired by the atmosphere, Newcastle approached the contest with confidence rather than caution. Joelinton set the tone early by challenging Yamal strongly, while the hosts matched Barcelona throughout the contest.
In the second half, Howe made a bold attacking move, introducing Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, and leading scorer Anthony Gordon, who had been too unwell to start the match.
Barnes’s goal sparks celebrations before late twist
The changes quickly produced results. Gordon found Murphy, whose pass set up Barnes to finish and give Newcastle the lead in the 86th minute.
Goalkeeper Joan Garcia managed to get a touch on the strike but could not keep it out, triggering wild celebrations around the stadium.
Barnes was later substituted to a standing ovation, but the forward’s joy turned to disbelief on the bench as the final moments unfolded.
Barcelona’s late penalty erased the advantage Newcastle had worked so hard to secure, leaving the home side frustrated after coming so close to a famous win.
A quiet night ends with decisive moment for Yamal
For much of the match, Yamal had been kept under control, largely due to the work of Lewis Hall, who restricted the winger’s opportunities in open play.
His best earlier effort arrived in the first half when Ramsdale pushed a shot onto the side netting.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick nevertheless kept the teenager on the pitch while introducing fresh attackers, including Dani Olmo, Marcus Rashford, and Ferran Torres, late in the game.
When the penalty was awarded, Yamal stepped forward amid loud jeers from the crowd and calmly placed the ball into the corner, prompting jubilant celebrations from the Barcelona bench and ensuring the Spanish side avoided taking a deficit into the return leg.
