Wrexham strengthens playoff position with victory over Swansea

Wrexham tightened their grip on a place in the Championship’s top six after defeating fellow Welsh side Swansea City at STōK Cae Ras. The hosts took the lead midway through the first half when Nathan Broadhead scored his eighth goal of the season across all competitions.

The match began at a lively pace. Just forty seconds after kick-off, Goncalo Franco attempted an early effort, but Arthur Okonkwo dealt with the shot comfortably. Moments later, Lawrence Vigouroux had to react quickly at the opposite end, stretching to push away a dangerous header from Broadhead.

Swansea’s best opportunity arrived in the 21st minute. Championship top scorer Zan Vipotnik, who has netted 19 times in all competitions this season, ran onto a superb through ball from Franco and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. However, Okonkwo produced an excellent save to deny him.

The visitors were punished shortly afterwards for failing to convert that chance. Four minutes later, Sam Smith, Lewis O’Brien, and Callum Doyle combined in the build-up before Broadhead cut past Cameron Burgess and fired past Vigouroux from a tight angle to put Wrexham ahead.

Swansea control possession but struggle to threaten

Vitor Matos’ side controlled possession for long periods and attempted to dictate the tempo, yet they found it increasingly difficult to create clear chances against Okonkwo. Before the break, Smith and Kabore both had opportunities as the home side looked to extend their advantage.

After the restart Broadhead continued to pose a threat, curling a shot narrowly wide as Wrexham remained dangerous going forward. Swansea responded by introducing Liam Cullen, Eom Jisung, and Malick Yalcouye before the hour mark in an effort to add more attacking presence.

The changes improved Swansea’s effectiveness in the final third. Okonkwo was required again to keep out a powerful strike from Marko Stamenic, while Yalcouye later sent an effort over the crossbar.

A late goal secures crucial three points

The outcome was sealed two minutes from time. A cross from George Thomason was met by Callum Doyle, whose header deflected in off the legs of Liam Cullen and doubled Wrexham’s lead.

The victory allowed Phil Parkinson’s side to open up a six-point gap over seventh-placed Southampton, who face league leaders Coventry City on Saturday.

For Swansea, the defeat dealt a significant blow to their fading play-off hopes. They slipped to 12th place and now sit eight points behind the top six with eight matches remaining.

Wrexham, meanwhile, returned to winning ways after recent defeats against Chelsea and Hull City, strengthening their position in the race for a play-off spot.
