Ollie Watkins’ second-half header earned Aston Villa a slim victory over Lille in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie. The success ended a run of four matches without a win in all competitions and gives Unai Emery’s side the upper hand ahead of next Thursday’s return fixture in the West Midlands.
Chances had been scarce for much of the contest until Watkins produced a decisive moment with Villa’s first shot on target. The England striker reacted quickly to Emiliano Buendia’s flick and cleverly guided a looping header beyond goalkeeper Berke Ozer to break the deadlock.
The opening period had offered little excitement in front of the goal, but the breakthrough shortly after the hour mark finally lifted the tempo. Villa suddenly looked more threatening as they pushed to strengthen their advantage.
Missed chances and Lille’s rare threat
Amadou Onana came close to adding a second when his curling attempt struck the woodwork, while Watkins was later unable to finish when through one-on-one with Ozer. Buendia also had an opportunity but volleyed wide from around 12 yards.
Lille’s clearest opportunity had arrived before the interval. Veteran forward Olivier Giroud glanced a header across the face of the goal, though the hosts could not convert the chance.
Despite a late push from the French side, Villa held firm to protect their narrow lead and carry it into the decisive second leg.
Victory boosts belief for Emery’s side
Villa had previously beaten Lille during their run to the Conference League semi-finals in 2024 and reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season. Based on this campaign, another strong European journey may not be out of reach for the club.
The result was also notable as Villa secured their first victory on French soil at the seventh attempt. The disciplined display came despite the absence of several key players, including injured pair Matty Cash and Youri Tielemans.
Captain John McGinn’s return was another positive development. The midfielder was fit enough to take a place on the bench after being out with a knee issue since 18 January, offering encouragement with the crucial stage of the season approaching.
Defensive structure key to important win
In recent weeks Unai Emery had spoken about the need to restore defensive balance following domestic defeats to Newcastle, Wolves, and Chelsea. That improvement was evident against Lille.
Lamare Bogarde stepped in effectively for Cash, while Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa ensured the hosts struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the evening.
After Watkins delivered the decisive moment, Villa showed the confidence that helped them win seven of their eight league-phase matches and climb as high as third in the Premier League.
