Real take control as Valverde hat-trick leaves City facing huge task

Manchester City now face a daunting challenge to keep their Champions League hopes alive after Federico Valverde produced a stunning first-half hat-trick that handed Real Madrid a commanding advantage in their last-16 clash.

The English side made a positive start at the Bernabeu, creating early pressure and causing moments of concern for the home defence. Despite that encouraging opening, City soon found themselves struggling as the match shifted dramatically in Real’s favour.

Madrid were missing several key attacking players, with Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham unavailable through injury and Rodrygo still sidelined. Even without those stars, the Spanish giants still carried enough threat to punish City’s defensive weaknesses.

The breakthrough came after 20 minutes with a simple but effective move. Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball that dropped behind Nico O’Reilly, allowing Valverde to race forward, round Gianluigi Donnarumma and finish from a narrow angle.

Valverde dominates with first-half masterclass

Real Madrid quickly tightened their grip on the match as Valverde struck again only seven minutes after the opener. The midfielder calmly placed a low shot across Donnarumma to double the home side’s advantage.

His third goal was even more impressive and completed a remarkable hat-trick before the break. Receiving a perfectly weighted lofted pass, Valverde cleverly lifted the ball over Marc Guehi in a tight space before finishing on the volley beyond Donnarumma.

The Uruguayan is not usually known for scoring frequently, but this display highlighted his quality. His trio of goals earned applause from injured teammates Bellingham and Mbappe, who watched from the stands.

Madrid’s momentum was clear as the stadium crowd responded to every attack, turning the famous arena into an intimidating environment for Guardiola’s players.

Chances missed as city search for response

City’s problems nearly worsened just after the hour mark when the hosts were awarded a penalty. Donnarumma brought down Vinicius inside the area, giving Madrid the chance to extend their lead further.

The goalkeeper redeemed himself moments later by diving to his left to stop the penalty attempt, which had been struck too casually to beat a keeper of his calibre.

Guardiola’s team did manage to create opportunities of their own. O’Reilly capitalised on a mistake from Thiago inside the box, but Courtois reacted quickly and blocked the attempt with his leg.

Another concern for City was the lack of impact from Erling Haaland. Madrid’s defence kept the Norwegian quiet throughout the game, and he also received little service from teammates.

Guardiola must inspire major comeback

Before this encounter, City and Real Madrid had faced each other 15 times in the Champions League, with the results evenly balanced between victories, defeats and draws.

That record now puts additional pressure on Guardiola, who must guide his side to one of the most remarkable turnarounds of his time in charge if City are to stay in the competition.

The visitors showed attacking intent with players such as Jeremy Doku creating early danger for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but their open midfield allowed Madrid to break forward and exploit weaknesses in defence.

Despite the heavy setback, City may take some encouragement from the chances they created. However, Real Madrid’s vast experience in this tournament means they will approach the return leg with quiet confidence.
