Laporta declares Barcelona “unstoppable” after election triumph

Joan Laporta has pledged a powerful future for FC Barcelona after winning re-election with more than 68% of the vote. The result confirms he will begin another five-year spell from 1 July, marking his second consecutive tenure and fourth overall in charge of the club.

His main challenger, Victor Font, collected close to 30%, while the rest of the ballots were declared void or invalid. Nearly 48,500 members took part, representing a turnout of just over 42%.

Laporta had stepped aside from his role last month, complying with club regulations in order to stand again. Reflecting on the outcome, he described it as emphatic and said it provides significant momentum heading into the next phase.

He emphasized the importance of the club’s democratic structure, highlighting how members directly choose both the president and board. According to him, this process underlines the uniqueness of Barcelona.

Ambitious plans on and off the pitch

The 63-year-old outlined clear objectives for his renewed mandate, promising to reinforce the squad and push forward with the redevelopment of the Camp Nou. He also insisted that the club and its supporters will stand united in the face of any challenges.

Laporta expressed gratitude to the voting members, describing the election as a celebration of civic engagement. He added that the coming years would be exciting and full of opportunity for the club.

His previous leadership period between 2003 and 2010 included the appointment of Pep Guardiola, a decision widely associated with one of the most successful eras in Barcelona’s history.

He now aims to build on that legacy while addressing both sporting and institutional priorities during his new term.

Positive momentum despite financial concerns

In recent seasons, Barcelona has faced notable economic difficulties, yet they managed to secure a domestic treble last campaign. Their current form also reflects progress, as they sit four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

A standout performance from Raphinha, who netted a hat-trick, helped deliver a 5-2 victory over Sevilla FC. Attention now turns to European competition.

Barcelona are set to face Newcastle United in the return leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. The first match ended 1-1 after a dramatic 96th-minute penalty from Lamine Yamal at St James’ Park.

With strong backing from members and encouraging results on the field, Laporta believes the club is entering a decisive and promising chapter.
