Gyokeres and Alvarez penalties leave Champions League tie wide open

Arsenal and Atletico Madrid played out a tense and eventful Champions League semi-final first leg in Madrid, with both teams converting penalties in a 1-1 draw that keeps everything to play for ahead of next week’s return meeting in London.

The opening stages were cautious, with neither side willing to overcommit or hand over an early advantage. Clear chances were limited as both teams focused on defensive discipline, but the contest shifted just before half-time when Viktor Gyokeres earned Arsenal a penalty after going down under a challenge from David Hancko.

Gyokeres stepped up himself and confidently converted from the spot one minute before the interval, giving the visitors a crucial lead and rewarding Arsenal for their patience in a tight first half.

Atletico respond strongly after the break

Diego Simeone’s side emerged for the second period with far greater urgency and immediately began forcing Arsenal deeper. Ademola Lookman tested David Raya, whose save proved vital, before Gabriel Magalhaes made an important block to prevent Antoine Griezmann from converting the rebound.

Atletico’s pressure was eventually rewarded when Marcos Llorente’s effort from outside the box struck Ben White’s leg before making contact with his hand. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, and Julian Alvarez emphatically fired his effort into the top corner to bring the hosts level.

The equaliser shifted momentum further in Atletico’s favour, with Griezmann later rattling the crossbar and Lookman missing a major opportunity when he shot directly at Raya from close range.

Arsenal stand firm despite late controversy

Although Atletico pushed hard, Arsenal remained resilient and avoided leaving Spain at a disadvantage. Mikel Arteta’s side were also left frustrated late on when substitute Eberechi Eze appeared to have won a second penalty after getting to the ball before Hancko, only for the decision to be overturned after another VAR intervention.

Despite lacking sustained attacking momentum for much of the second half, Arsenal showed defensive resolve under pressure and survived several dangerous moments to preserve parity in the tie.

The visitors may also feel unfortunate about the handball decision that led to Atletico’s goal, given the ball deflected onto White’s hand after first striking his leg, but they can still take encouragement from returning home with the score level.

Key individuals shape a balanced contest

Gyokeres delivered one of his stronger performances for Arsenal, not only winning the first-half spot-kick but also showing composure with his finish from 12 yards. His contribution provided the platform Arsenal needed on a night when opportunities were scarce.

For Atletico, Alvarez underlined why he is attracting widespread admiration. He was central to several dangerous moments, created openings with clever movement, and struck his penalty with such force that Raya had no chance. Returning after a thigh issue, his display was influential, although Atletico will be concerned after he appeared to suffer another problem before being substituted.

With the score tied and both sides producing moments of danger, the semi-final remains delicately balanced before the decisive second leg at Arsenal’s home ground next Tuesday.
