The New York Yankees announced Monday that outfielder Jasson Domínguez is back on the major league roster. His promotion comes as right-hander Luis Gil, last season’s Rookie of the Year, was optioned to Triple-A after struggling through four starts with a 6.05 ERA.
Domínguez, now 23, once ranked among baseball’s elite prospects and drew lofty comparisons early in his career. He made an immediate impression in 2023 by blasting four home runs across his first seven appearances before an injury interrupted that surge.
Last season marked his first extended opportunity in the majors, where he appeared in 123 games and posted a .257 batting average with a .331 on-base percentage and .388 slugging percentage. He also contributed 18 doubles, 10 home runs, 47 RBIs, 58 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases.
Stanton’s injury opens a temporary opportunity
Domínguez’s recall follows concern surrounding Giancarlo Stanton, who exited Friday’s game because of tightness in his right calf. The severity remains unclear, leaving open the possibility that Stanton could either miss only a short stretch or require injured list placement.
Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Stanton felt some improvement by Saturday and believed he may have addressed the issue before it worsened. Boone added that the club would continue monitoring how the situation develops.
While Stanton’s status is unresolved, Domínguez gives New York added flexibility. He could slot in at designated hitter or take an outfield role, allowing players such as Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham, or Cody Bellinger to rotate through DH duties.
Strong Triple-A numbers support promotion
Before returning to the Yankees, Domínguez was producing at a high level in Triple-A. Across 24 games this season, he recorded a .326 batting average, .415 on-base percentage, and .478 slugging percentage.
His performance included five doubles, three home runs, 15 RBIs, 15 runs scored, and eight stolen bases, showing both offensive consistency and speed.
Those numbers helped strengthen his case for another opportunity in the Bronx, especially as the Yankees look to maintain momentum amid injury concerns.
Yankees remain atop AL East despite Sunday setback
New York’s eight-game winning streak ended Sunday with a loss, but the club still owns an 18-10 record and leads the American League East.
Even though Jazz Chisholm Jr., Austin Wells, and Trent Grisham have not yet delivered their expected production, the Yankees have emerged as one of baseball’s most productive lineups.
Their plus-47 run differential leads the American League, underscoring how effectively the team has performed during the opening stretch of the season.
