Barcelona produced a ruthless attacking performance to sweep aside Newcastle United and secure their place in the quarter-finals. Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski both struck twice as the hosts overwhelmed Eddie Howe’s side, turning a competitive contest into a one-sided affair after the break.
The Brazilian winger was at the heart of everything, scoring twice, creating two more goals, and winning a penalty in a commanding display. While Lamine Yamal and others contributed, it was Raphinha who consistently caused problems and dictated the tempo of Barcelona’s attack.
Despite Newcastle’s resilience early on, Barcelona’s quality and cutting edge proved decisive. Once they seized control, the game slipped rapidly away from the visitors, with the home side ultimately cruising to a convincing aggregate victory.
Supporters inside the Nou Camp even found time for a celebratory wave late on, underlining just how comfortable the night became for the Spanish giants in a knockout tie that had briefly threatened to be far tighter.
Newcastle fight back in chaotic first half
The match began in disastrous fashion for Newcastle as defensive errors allowed Barcelona to take an early lead, with Raphinha finishing neatly after a quick exchange with Fermin Lopez. However, the visitors responded well, showing determination and composure to level through Anthony Elanga, who finished from close range after a cross from Lewis Hall.
Barcelona regained the advantage when Gerard Martin’s header found Marc Bernal unmarked, but Newcastle refused to back down. Harvey Barnes delivered a precise ball to the far post, where Elanga struck first time to bring the sides level again in a lively and unpredictable opening period.
Just as Newcastle looked to head into the break on level terms, a decisive moment shifted momentum. A VAR review led to a penalty after Kieran Trippier was judged to have pulled back Raphinha, and Yamal calmly converted from the spot to restore Barcelona’s lead before halftime.
At 3-2, Newcastle remained firmly in contention, having matched their opponents for long stretches and twice clawed their way back into the tie.
Second-half collapse proves costly
Any hope of a comeback quickly disappeared after the restart. Barcelona struck again within minutes, as Raphinha’s incisive pass released Lopez, who finished clinically to extend the lead and put Newcastle under immediate pressure.
From there, the visitors unravelled defensively. Lewandowski added a fifth with a header and soon grabbed another with a powerful finish, capitalising on space and hesitation at the back. The defensive structure that had held at times in the first half completely broke down.
Errors continued to mount as the game progressed. A misplaced pass from Jacob Ramsey gifted Raphinha another goal, summing up a second-half performance riddled with mistakes. Newcastle, who had shown spirit earlier, was left chasing shadows as Barcelona took full advantage.
By the closing stages, the contest had long been decided, with Newcastle simply enduring the remainder of a difficult evening that spiralled out of control.
Lessons from a harsh European exit
Newcastle’s night was ultimately defined by defensive lapses. Slips, poor marking, and costly decisions allowed Barcelona to punish them repeatedly, especially after the interval when the structure collapsed under pressure.
There were warning signs despite a recent clean sheet domestically, and those issues were exposed against a high-quality attacking side. Players were left frustrated with one another, particularly during set-piece situations and moments of disorganisation.
Yet the defeat does not erase what has been a notable European run. Reaching the last 16 only for the second time in the club’s history marks a significant achievement, and for large parts of the tie, they were able to compete with one of Europe’s elite teams.
Although the manner of the exit will sting, the experience gained from facing opposition of this level could prove valuable. For much of the time they held their own, but the second-half collapse highlighted the level required to progress further.
