Atletico take control after win over 10-man Barcelona

Atletico Madrid moved a step closer to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League with an impressive victory away to Barcelona, who were reduced to 10 men before the interval. It marked Atletico’s first triumph at the Nou Camp since 2006 and gave them a strong advantage ahead of the return leg.

Although the home side controlled large parts of the opening period, the turning point arrived just before half-time. A challenge by Pau Cubarsi on Giuliano Simeone as he raced through on goal initially resulted in a yellow card. However, referee Istvan Kovacs upgraded the decision to a dismissal after consulting the pitchside monitor.

From the resulting free-kick, Julian Alvarez produced a precise finish, sending the ball beyond the goalkeeper and giving Atletico a crucial lead heading into the break.

Barcelona dominate but fail to convert chances

Despite being a player short, Barcelona responded strongly in the second half and dictated much of the play. They created numerous opportunities, finishing the match with 24 attempts, but were unable to find a way past Atletico’s defense.

Marcus Rashford came closest to leveling the score, striking the crossbar from a free-kick. He also had earlier efforts denied and saw one goal ruled out after Lamine Yamal was judged to be offside in the build-up.

Yamal, usually influential, had a quieter outing, and Barcelona’s inability to convert their chances proved costly. Their attacking pressure lacked the finishing touch needed to change the course of the match.

Clinical Atletico punish hosts and seize advantage

While Barcelona pushed forward, Atletico remained disciplined and efficient. They limited risks and capitalized on their opportunities, registering just three shots on target but making them count.

Their second goal came when Alexander Sorloth finished from close range after a low delivery from Matteo Ruggeri, effectively sealing the win for the visitors.

Barcelona entered the match in strong form, having won eight and drawn one of their previous nine games, including a recent 2-1 away victory against Atletico in La Liga. However, this defeat leaves them with a significant challenge ahead as they travel to Madrid for the decisive second leg next Tuesday.
