Benches emptied on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium during the game between the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Angels after Jorge Soler reacted to a pitch from Reynaldo López that came up and in and ended up near the backstop in the fifth inning. The incident followed a previous at-bat in which Soler had already been hit in the hand by the first pitch after opening the game with a home run in his first plate appearance.
Following the high pitch, both players stared each other down while play continued briefly, allowing Nolan Schanuel to advance to second base and keeping other players occupied on the field. Soler then moved toward López, which triggered the altercation as players from both teams rushed in and punches were thrown, though it was unclear whether any made contact.
Ejections and disciplinary action
Both Soler and López were ejected from the game after the confrontation. Major League Baseball later announced that each player received a seven-game suspension along with undisclosed fines.
Both players have since appealed the suspensions. López’s suspension was reduced to five games as part of that process, according to reports. No additional players were disciplined following the incident.
Player explanations and reactions
Soler explained that the sequence of events influenced his reaction, noting the pitch location after being hit earlier in the game. He said he approached López after asking if everything was alright and that he did not like the response he received, which prompted him to go out onto the field. He also pointed to the close proximity of the pitch to his head and emphasized that, at this level, such misses are unacceptable.
López stated that there was no intent to hit Soler at any point and described the situation as unfortunate in how it unfolded. He expressed regret over the outcome and maintained that his pitches were not meant to cause harm.
Braves manager Walt Weiss, who entered the field early in the incident and tackled Soler during the scuffle, said his intention was to help de-escalate the situation. He explained that he felt the need to get Soler off his feet to prevent further escalation, noting their prior relationship as teammates and his instinct to intervene.
Game result and series context
Despite the disruption, the Braves went on to win the game 7–2. The two teams were scheduled to complete their three-game series the following day, marking their final meeting of the 2026 regular season.
Soler had previously been part of the Braves’ World Series-winning team in 2021 and entered the season with modest early numbers, while López had recorded a strong start with a low earned run average over his first appearances.
